Oil Sands: U.K. 'Partner In Crime' With Canada On Oil Exports

Uk Government Oil Sands

OTTAWA - A British media report says the U.K. government has been giving secret support at the very highest levels to Ottawa's campaign against European penalties on its oilsands fuel, prompting environmentalists to call Britain Canada's "partner in crime."

The Guardian newspaper says energy giants Shell and BP, which both have major oilsands projects in Alberta, have been lobbying the government of Prime Minister David Cameron to back Canada's fight against the European proposal.

According to documents released under freedom of information laws, at least 15 high-level meetings and frequent communications have taken place since September between Ottawa and London.

The European proposal is to designate transport fuel from tar sands as resulting in 22 per cent more greenhouse gas emissions than that from conventional fuels, officially labelling Alberta's oilsands fuel as dirtier.

Ahead of the European vote to approve the fuel quality regulations on Friday, British Foreign Secretary William Hague offered support to the Harper government, sending an "immediate action" cable in September to the U.K. embassies in Canada asking "to communicate our position and seek Canadian views on what might be acceptable."

The Guardian says the U.K. and Canada's shared opposition to the European plan puts the U.K. in a minority among EU countries and will be deeply embarrassing as a new round of global negotiations on tackling climate change begins in Durban, South Africa on Monday.

The Guardian report is based on documents obtained by the Co-operative _ a U.K. mutual business group that targets tar sands as part of its climate change campaigning.

"It is very disappointing that the U.K. government is supporting Canada's efforts and we hope it has a rethink and puts tackling climate change ahead of Canada's trade interests when it comes to vote on the European commission's commonsense proposal," Colin Baines, toxic fuels campaign manager at the Co-operative told the Guardian.

Bill McKibben, a U.S. environmentalist who was arrested in August protesting against TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline, said the U.K. seems to have emerged as "Canada's partner in crime."

"This will be among the biggest single environmental decisions the Cameron government makes," he said.

Climate change means, weather extremes. Tornado's, hurricane's, floods, droughts, are all more severe and more in number.

In the dirty tar sands vicinity, Athabasca lake has deformed fish in it. They have found, mercury, heavy metals and cancer causing agents in, the mighty Athabasca River. The huge Athabasca watershed is now contaminated. Another flock of ducks died from landing in the filthy crud. Our beloved Whooping Cranes, fly over the dirty sands. We can only pray they don't decide to land in the sludge too. They were brought back from near extinction. The Caribou are dying. The idiots are cutting down, the last Boreal Forests in North America. In those forests, there are song birds, big game, bears, wolves and many wildlife creatures. Those huge forests absorb a lot of Carbon Monoxide, so stupid humans can breathe. Worst of all, there is a First Nations village, dying from cancer. Even the very rare cancer of, exposure to petroleum.

I would love to, force feed, P.M. Harper, P.M. Cameron, and President Obama, the deformed fish, the poisoned Caribou and the water down stream of the tar sands.

Man is the most destructive animal on the planet, and the most stupid ones at that.

They are a partner in crime in just about everything. Iraq and Afghanistan. The hacking is certainly happening here too. PR for the British royalty said that they were hacked too. If this is true, then why are they not calling for the prosecution of the perpetrators? I'm guessing that there are a lot of partners in crime that go right to the very top where positions in government, the media, military, intelligence, the courts, and large corporations are exchanged like musical chairs. Fact, the CEO and many other people sold a large quantity of shares in BP just before the "accident". These wars surely use a lot of oil. Are we still paying $400.00 a gallon in Afghanistan? Supposedly, the major stockholder of BP is regent of Britain. A top board member of Monsanto is also on the board of BP. Murdoch has his own personal drones, made the author of the Patriot Act a top position at one of his newspapers, and he, Viet Dinh is the godfather of his grandson. Could this get anymore incestuous? Oh, yes, the Bush family is related to the British royalty and Obama is related to Cheney.

The EU position is based on stupidity and lies..
If the oil sands are so bad, why do they have to make up lies to support their position?

Here is the problem. If Climate change is real, and we do nothing about it now, we are screwed. If Climate change is not real, and all those scientists got it wrong but we do change things, we do use more wind, solar ect. we win. Fossil fuels will eventually be gone. Why do we not have a inexpensive electric car for Canadians? Why, with all the Petroleum products Canada produces, are we paying 1.20 a liter at the pumps? They WANT us to use fossil fuels, as it perpetuates our current economic model. As an example, I give you the electric scooter. Cheap, as easy to use as a bicycle. Now the want to include it with all low speed scooters. Licensing Changes for Operators of Motor Scooters and Mopeds http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/lsm.shtml

Wind and solar are not yet viable alternatives - billions needs to be poured into R&D. Even if business and people were willing to pay 3X more for energy, the transition will take decades.

Here's the problem, shutting down the oil sands and pipelines will simply result in more oil being imported from Nigeria.
Oil that has a higher carbon footprint and where there are huge oil spills every year.

It needs to be government funded. It needs to be done NOW! I refer you to the Manhattan Project. Prior to their success, it was believed to be impossible. Now if we can invest resources in the past to change we can do it now. Billions are spent on new phone technology, computers, tablets etc. It can be done in a short time IF we have the will to do it.

Making liquid fuels from oil sands requires energy for steam injection and refining. This process generates two to four times the amount of greenhouse gases per barrel of final product as the "production" of conventional oil.[3] If combustion of the final products is included, the so-called "Well to Wheels" approach, oil sands extraction, upgrade and use emits 10 to 45% more greenhouse gases than conventional crude.[4]

James Cameron of Avatar fame made the same noises about the OilSands as the rest of the green acolytes. However he actually went up to the OilSands and spent three days looking at things for himself. He came away with something that every eco knob doesn't have - an INFORMED opinion.

He doesn't have to rely on the purulent discharge that passes as information from every person who has an opinion but HAS NEVER BEEN THERE !

I have been there and I don't care how many campus cafe environmental exposes anyone holds as sacrosanct truth or how many 'this is the truth' environmental personal blog sites they can point to - if you haven't been there , your opinion is worth less then some one who has . !!!

"Shell and BP, which both have major oilsands projects in Alberta, have been lobbying the government of PM David Cameron to back Canada's fight against the European proposal." This is what concerns me most about this whole 'debate' about the 'oilsands' -- i.e., the lack of genuine debate that can be trusted. A government sticking its neck out to openly take a position and rationally defend it is one thing; but what we are seeing more and more is the 'debate' being dishonestly hijacked, manipulated or effectively shut down from behind the scenes by powerful vested interests with effective control of our 'elected' governments.

Gee, what a surprise!

Bilderberg controlled Politician A constructing under-the-table deals with Bilderberg controlled Politician B.

Ah, let's see, just who holds membership on the most powerful 135 member organization; The House of Bilderberg, on the planet with Rothschild and Rockefeller being cornerstone members?

Oh, there is Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands who happens to be the leading shareholder in Royal Dutch Shell.

And British Royalty holds a seat on Bilderberg, but only has their Rep attend annual Bilderberg meetings, and, if you peal of the investor layers in British Petroleum, you will get to Queenie somewhere in deep background.

And Rockefeller's Exxon, no one gets on their Board of Directors without David's personal approval, through Imperial Oil keeps close tabs on the "Ethical Oil" sands as well.

So, politician A and B will follow the script that is handed to them by the Oil Cartel and to hell with the environment when it comes to the Global profit picture of the big three.

Something you can depend on: The climate has and always will "change." Science is a hypothesis ("climate change" is a nonsensical one) that through experimentation and observation can be proven as fact. Anybody got that science? That can be replicated anywhere in the world?? Until then climate change, global warming...whatever, is merely a matter of public relations.

Here is a summary of a peer-reviewed study that outlines the environmental issues that are created by oil sands mining:
