Quick Study: A Naturopathic Doctor's Favourite Exercise Tip

Quick Study [kwik stuhd-ee]: The Huffington Post Canada's tips to make your life a little sweeter, five minutes at a time. Think of it as a cheatsheet for your general well-being.

For the next 30 days, we're checking out how to take a break from your busy holiday schedule and relax -- in unexpected ways.

THE EXPERT:

The Huffington Post Canada talked to naturopathic doctor Linda Morrison, based in Summerside P.E.I, on how to feel relaxed during the holiday season.

HuffPost: How do you suggest taking a break from the stresses of the holidays?

Dr. Linda Morrison: Sticking out your belly when breathing may not sound very appealing, but all our cells need oxygen. Optimal oxygen means less stress, more energy and a better mood. The hustle and bustle of this holiday season can cause us to stress and breathe less. You might find yourself not breathing or shallow breathing.

Start by looking in a mirror to see if your chest or belly is expanding. Take a deep breath into your belly for a four second count; slowly do your best to exhale for four seconds as well. A great trick to remember this is to place convenient sticky dots where you will see them; for example, your car dash, bathroom mirror, computer monitor, etc. This visual cue reinforces the habit of deep breathing for a few breaths when you see your dots. Breathing is like meditation, the attempt is the process.

BLOGGER SECRETS:

Huffington Post blogger Frank Lipman gives us a step-by-step guide on how to perform a breathing exercise.

When we are aware of our breathing, it helps to calm the body and mind. Breathing consciously is easy and convenient. Tuning in to your breathing anchors you in the awareness of your body, in the here and now. Here are some steps:

  • 1. Find a quiet spot where you won't be disturbed.
  • 2.Get into a relaxed seated position, with both feet flat on the floor.
  • 3.Put your hands on your abdomen
  • 4.Close your mouth gently and touch your tongue to your upper palate and breath through your nose. If your nose is blocked for any particular reason it is fine to breath through your mouth.
