Canada Climate Change Policy: Desmond Tutu Calls Harper Out

Canada has received a public scolding for its climate-change policy from several prominent South Africans, including anti-apartheid hero Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The group urges Canada to once again play a constructive role in global affairs, as it did in the 1980s when it imposed sanctions on the apartheid regime.

It wants the Canadian government to play a more helpful role at the climate conference in Durban, South Africa.

"Canada, you were once considered a leader on global issues like human rights and environmental protection. Today, you're home to polluting tar sands oil, speeding the dangerous effects of climate change," says the letter, signed by Tutu, a half-dozen South African activists and African environmental groups.

"For us in Africa, climate change is a life and death issue. By dramatically increasing Canada's global warming pollution, tar sands mining and drilling makes the problem worse, and exposes million of Africans to more devastating drought and famine today and in the years to come."

The group took out a full-page Canadian newspaper ad Wednesday with its message condemning the federal government. It is also supported by Canadian environmental groups, including Environmental Defence, Equiterre and Greenpeace Canada.

An image of the Maple Leaf, divided in two by a dotted line, is featured prominently in the ad. One half resembles the red leaf on the Canadian flag, while the other side shows a blackened leaf, dripping with oil.

The Canadian government, meanwhile, is dropping strong hints that it will seek to withdraw from the Kyoto accord.

When asked about the ad Tuesday, the Harper government wouldn't mention Tutu by name but simply said Kyoto can't work because it doesn't include major emitters.

"Our Government is balancing the need for a cleaner and healthier environment with protecting jobs and economic growth," a spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office wrote in an email.

"We remain committed to reducing Canada's greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent below 2005 levels by 2020, and we are making good progress."

The Tar Sands critics, especially the celebrity type, including Bish Tutu, continue to finger the CO2 issue as being the main problem with the Tar Sands in Alberta, Canada. Its not that big of a CO2 emitter, even if the tar sands bitumen produces "3 times as much CO2 as conventional oil" per barrel...

And, even though the Tar Sands are "Canada's fastest growing source of CO2"...

The greater tragedies include:
- Cancer ridden communities downstream of the Tar Sands, and fish with tumors and genetic defects;
- water draws on the winter flow of the Athabasca is causing oxygen levels to drop below levels required for aquatic life [fish are dying];
- utterly wastefull efficiency rates of energy where a barrel of bitumen takes more energy to produce than it contains {really, I mean ARRRGGGG how ridiculous!!
- the natural gas used to steam tar from sand, a clean fuel to produce a dirty one!! The tar sands uses the equivalent of 1/3rd of Alberta's huge annual natural gas production every year it operates, causing natural gas shortages that the industry cries "that gas needs replacing, lets go drill Alaska, or get it from hazardous Shale Gas in BC" {meanwhile, Shell flares every bit of natural gas in Nigeria's oilfields}

As for real CO2 sources, it is COAL. Coal in the USA is now eclipsed by coal fired power plants in China, with 1000 new ones planned. Shut the coal door!! Shut the Tar Sands too [but for different

Canada ships millions of tons of coal also, so I agree with you.

And they don't know the half of it!! Quoting Ben Parfitt:
" the expanding B.C. shale-gas industry would require access to a huge amount of new clean hydropower — between two and three times the power produced at the proposed Site C dam."

"Deepening the irony, much of the shale gas produced in B.C is currently destined for Alberta, where it is used as fuel in the tarsands. How “clean” does that sound? "

All that clean natural gas and electricity wasted on production of Bitumen!! Come on, this is not happening!! Yes, it is Virginia.

Harper is an echo for the United States. His prime objective is to ensure the rich stay rich and the poor get poorer and in that regard he is doing rather well.

I respect Desmond Tutu. I have no respect for Harper. None. Canada used to be considered a peace keeping country and humanitarian beacon. I used to be proud to be a Canadian but no longer. Harper is a Conservative through and through. That means he lacks the ability to see the big picture and future.

You know you are in trouble when the great Desmond Tutu is on your case!

Considering the Sanctions imposed by Canada on the late Apartheid South Africa, it shows how far Harper Reform has destroyed Canada's good name Internationally for a few cheap votes at home.

The truth hurts Archbishop Desmond Tutu, we honestly don't care about this issue or the struggles in Africa. If we did we would act on it - we're tired of coming to the aid of your continent. Pollution is a non-issue here according to the CPPA led puppet Torrie government. This post by a Harper constituency member.

I am continuously embarrassed by this government. Canada used to be a place one could be proud to be from.

The picture is too unflattering and makes Tutu, a real international figure, look too much like Herman Cain.

Desmond Tutu is the supporter and promoter of the African National Congress which is a Marxist organization and we all know Karl Marx's quote, "that religion is the opium of the people". That is the clerical collar of Desomond Tutu is wearing.. At least Herman Cain is a Christian and a Conservative,

I'm not a Harper fan but I am glad he takes the right stand on pollution. His environment minister has announced a $600M plan to fight pollution. CO2 is far from being the problem it is made up to be and the constant focus on global warming has taken the spotlight away from the real problem, industrial pollution. The false AGW debate has given polluters a chance to embark on a full scale attack on the environment. This is the real problem that must be adddressed. Go for it Stevie boy.

. I,m not against Harper He became my new Hero when he stood up to the sapartists in Quebec knowing it could cost him a federal Election ,he had the balls to take a stand for Canada then . he does insists on selling out our resources ? I think if he would stand up for canada like he did in Quebec he would become a great leader to be remembered in history Our Very first Prime elected in 1867 Sir John A Macdonald many may not know was the leader of the Liberal-Conservative party thats right there was once unity , our sence of fairness towards other peoples and Nations and standing up for whats right , lets not attack our Leaders for good or bad lets work on unity and strenth so our economy does not need the tar sands to survive from bread crumbs we recieve for our resources our country can feed and supply fresh water to the world yet we have people here starving to death or living in poverty ask your self why ,when we are such a rich country and have so little yet we are one of the world leaders in holding our enconomy and banking systems in tact the bottom line in my opinion is because we are Canadians, tutu can hammer away at us but he is missing the point we can help and do more when we are strong enough to do so give us a chance to survive
03:27 AM on 11/30/2011
Harper's policies are as likely as not to lead to a revival of Quebec separatism. It may even be part of a divide and conquer plan. Meanwhile, his asbestos and oil sand policies are environmental disgraces. Tutu, a close associate of the great Nelson Mandela, is a hero. Harper is nothing more than a sockpuppet for foreign and corporate interests and is ruining Canada's reputation.

What's a sapartist? Is it worst than a fascist or a communist?

Canada's dent in the environment is microscopic. Go after the U.S. and China if want to actually make a difference for the environment.

I know. I love how these environmental groups love to bully Canada when the giant players who really contribute to GHG's get ignored or, at best, kid gloves. Sure, it's all the oilsands' fault: The oilsands' 0.5% total CO2 contribution of all human activities is clearly the cause of South Africa's long-term climate woes.

Its not that difficult for a South African to embarrass Canada's Prime Minister. Mulroney to Harper, etc. Oh well.
01:41 AM on 11/30/2011
And if the tarsands were in South Africa, would Desmond Tutu have demanded they not be exploited?

Not on your life. He'd be insisting they be developed for the good of the people of South Africa.

Is he demanding that South Africa shut its coal mines? If not, he's a hypocrite.

Synthetic oil has been mined from the tarsands since 1965. The extraction and refining process pollutes, but today it produces far less runoff and carbon emissions than it once did. New processes are being researched which will vastly reduce the carbon footprint of this resource. You'll have hear about this from the self-appointed tarsand critics.

Nice try, I haven't had time to check Tutu's involvement in activism against coal mines, but here is a topical, recent and relevant comparison - fracking. Desmond Tutu was quite vocal in his opposition to fracking in South Africa.

Clearly the Archbishop is consistent, understanding that ruining the environment is too high a price to pay for the sake of 'development'.

Environmental Groups Also Hate Canada because we were the ones behind The vote going through not to make producing Asbestos illegal for Country's to Export as a Product, Harper Convinced and was the reason why the vote failed as he felt Canada needed to produce the substance as Canada is the worlds largest asbestos producers in the world
03:39 AM on 11/30/2011
It should be pointed out that the real reason Canada continued to produce asbestos was because the US begged/forced us to continue since it was a crucial component of the space shuttle. The space shuttle thermal protection system's ceramic tiles contain asbestos. Now that the shuttle project is over, the asbestos mines will probably close. Nowadays, Canada only produces 5% of the world asbestos output.

Did the United States beg us to export it to India and other developing countries where it is killing workers?

But until very recently, we sent it overseas with no warning, no safety measures and were instrumental in blocking it being declared a hazardous substance. All in favour of that almighty dollar.

So we come upon oil reserves that could potentially turn us into oil king pins.................but w'll be considered bad if we exploit it?

It's kinda like getting away with bags of money in a bank heist, only to have the ink explode all over it

Who exactly would get turned into oil kingpins?

The number of people who would benefit for exploiting the tarsands is insignificant compared to how many people would profit from development of clean energy solutions.
04:18 AM on 11/30/2011
we probably shouldn't have been robbing the bank in the first place!
