RIM, BlackBerry Maker, Sees Shares Spike On Word Of iPhone, Android Integration

Research In Motion

Shares of Research In Motion rose 6 per cent after the BlackBerry maker announced plans to offer software to companies that will allow them to use iPhones and other mobile devices on its secure network starting in the first quarter of next year.

RIM said the service, named BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, will be available in March after a test run with some of its business customers.

Shares in RIM were up $1.01 to $18.02 in early morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The move is intended to help RIM encourage its corporate customers to stick with its services, even as some move away from BlackBerry devices.

The Waterloo, Ont., tech company has been losing consumer marketshare to Apple and Android devices and although it's still dominant in workplaces, its competitors are making inroads.

Looks like they're gradually moving away from being a hardware vendor towards being a network service provider. Given their complete lack of success as a hardware vendor, this is probably a good move.

Someone should have been focusing on people's cell phone needs and mobile opportunities instead of running around trying to buy a hockey team.

I have a Blackberry that my company requires me to use. If it weren't a work requirement, I wouldn't touch this piece of doo doo with a crowbar. For someone with large fingers, the keypad is a design from hell, and connection times are glacial. However, it's made by a Canadian company, so I guess I should be really proud.

I bet that within 3 mos, RIM will be back on top. They've gotten some positive press, they are the "business" standard, and in these trying times, people will be focused on business. Also, they've gotten dumped on so hard the past little while, that the "sheep" on Wall st should start getting sweet on them again. (don't ask me why, there is no explanation, but it will happen)

Evangelism worked for Apple during its comeback, maybe it can work for RIM, but who is going to lead this revival? It takes a visionary.
