Glenn Thibeault, NDP MP, Proposes Universal Cellphone Charger

Cellphone Charger

OTTAWA - Folks buried under a pile of old electronics are bound to get a charge out of this.

A New Democrat MP is proposing legislation that would require cellphone-makers to create a standardized universal cellphone charger for all new mobile phones sold in Canada.

Glenn Thibeault, the NDP's consumer protection critic, says it's costly, wasteful and environmentally unsound that most people end up storing or discarding perfectly good chargers every time they buy a new cellphone.

In 2009, 14 mobile phone manufacturers — including Apple, Research in Motion, Motorola, and Nokia — signed off on a memorandum of understanding making their devices compatible with a common European Union standard.

Thibeault says that shows manufacturers are willing to co-operate with what he calls a "simple and cost-effective change that will have positive consequences for the environment, reduce e-waste, and help save consumers money."

His proposal may get short-circuited, however — private member's bills, particularly those tabled by opposition MPs, rarely make it into law.

Many joke on this story but the more I think about it the more it makes me realize how horrible it would be with the NDP in power. Imagine if a law like this was actually made. It may be a nifty idea at first to minimize waste. But what it someone developed something much better in a year or two? There would be no way of bringing the new product to market. A few more nifty laws like this and a few decades later we begin to look like the old soviet union with its dilapidated technologies.

Please, hyberboyle much?? Cellphone have been common for twenty plus years and use slightly different versions of the same charger. This will have no effect on innovation because the innovation is in the battery - not the power delivery system.

And standardization is part of capitalism. Some come from Government (light sockets, plug-ins, plumbing, etc) some comes from industry (microwave sizes, bed sheets, etc) and together they make modern life possible.

The headline doesn't reflect the context of the story. The story's about common sense, not socialism.

Wow!
The NDP is only 2 years behind the times?
That's pretty good for them!

What next?
Standardized labelling for 8-track tapes?

Hear, hear!!! I like this idea.

what kind of garbage headline is, "Cellphone Socialism?" It's isn't socialist practice to ask your tech community to work together for consumers and the environment!?

Why would you even propose this? Seems very trivial... let business's decide, not the government.

Why wouldn't you? It is trivial. Some very small changes to make things slightly better. Fewer resources wasted and less useless clutter in the junk drawer. Is there anyone who wouldn't like this?

I would love to see this pass. I just get uncomfortable when the Government begins makings decisions for business's. That's all.

Yes, I have three types of plug-ins in my apartment (built in 1911) I love the freedom this allows me to not be able to plug in my computer in my bedroom.

Government standards are part of business.

It makes sense. I had a Blackberry with the common mini USB charger I never had to take it out of the wall because I always had something to charge on it, like my Kobo. The new Blackberry I got has something that looks like mini USB but is slightly different.

Paper Ballots WORK. Unverifiable e-voting doesn't

I would add to this bill. All manufacturers should allow the battery to be easily changeable.

Sorry, battery innovation is still going on, standardization won't work. Many new devices have such long lasting batteries that it makes sense to have them sealed (creating a thinner, lighter phone). The last time I had a need for an interchangeable battery would have been 2002. My current phone last three days on a single charge, fully charges in under an hour and is three years old.
