We want to hear from you: What were the top Canadian stories of 2011?

It was a remarkable year in news. Stephen Harper steamrolled the Michael Ignatieff Liberals to a long-coveted majority government, while Jack Layton rode an "Orange Crush" of support into the House of Commons, crushing the Bloc Québécois in Quebec and forming Canada’s Official Opposition.

When Layton died at the end of the summer, Canadians of all political stripes stopped and mourned, as hundreds upon hundreds turned out for visitations on Parliament Hill and at Toronto City Hall.

In between, William and Kate captivated the country on their first official visit overseas, while Vancouver rioters dismayed many the night their team lost the Stanley Cup final.

But there were several other stories that dominated headlines in Canada: from labour strife and hockey franchises to pipelines and foreign conflicts.

In your view, what were the year's biggest stories in Canada? What were the top headlines, the most important issues?

The top news story for Canada is Canada's Katrina, Attawapistak. A story that challenges First Nations Canadians and all Canadians to bring to a halt to the creeping holocaust of some 100 years that is the shame of the Canadian nation.

The rise and then fall and sad death of Jack Layton all within a few months.

The biggest story was my retirement. Visits to my parents in their new home is up there, too. My wife still loves me as I start out on a new career; now that's newsworthy.

Oh how could I forget about Heir Harpers' not-so-secret agenda to turn Canada into a facist police state. GO BILL c36! AMERICANIZE US AND TURN US INTO SLAVES.... er, wait, it happened. Can I still jump on the bandwagon?

The biggest story - twas the one not reported on Dec16 2010 -after numerous attempts, Harper pushes Bill c-36 through the senate. The bill gives the Canadian government broad sweeping powers that circumvent and kill - 400 years of tort law. One of the powers of bill C36 - abolishes the law of trespass in Canada. This is All hidden under the title of "the consumer protection act".

Im all for getting rid of tort law.......

The biggest story for me - Harper is still in the Government. It was amazing that people from my religious and ethnic background, traditionally liberals in Canada (Democrats back home), voted for his conservative candidates in major urban areas of Ontario, unseating strong liberals in the process. Needless to mention, that right winger should not have been in the Government to start with.

Another major success story for me - no more shark fin soups in Chinese restaurants in Toronto.

Finally, it was officially declared this year that Toronto will get a Ripley’s Aquarium in 2013. The city is getting first major tourist attraction in 25 years. Compare this to Chicago, where a major tourist attraction has been added almost every year for the last 25 years.

Way to go Toronto.

South Chicago is a great tourist attraction....

I guess we dont have the corruption in Toronto to compete
02:19 PM on 12/06/2011
Are you referring to University of Chicago or the south Chicago with its 'Turf wars'? For the former we don't have any comparison here. For the latter, we have Jane and Finch area here, although its no match for south Chicago's war zone. And you are right. Toronto cannot compete with Chicago in corruption.

Actually I was being a bit sarcastic, I did mean South Chicago for its turf wars. Frankly I personally would not compare Jane&Finch to South Chicago. I would walk around J&F in the daytime, but much of S.Chicago, based on my limited experience I would not even drive in it. I drove from the Frank L Wr house to Oprah's studio one sunday afternoon and that was an experience.
That said I do enjoy the lake area of Chicago, I would like to spend a little more time there....but not in the winter

the kardasians and lohan..........that's what the world wants to hear about not the reality of life but the reality of meaningless people...................

To me, the biggest story was Jack...finally leading his party into opposition for the first time in history, and then tragically dying so soon after. So amazing and so sad.

This whole year has been a marking stone in our history. It's a wonderful time to be alive for a variety of reason!
01:36 PM on 12/05/2011
The biggest news story of the year is the economic crisis which is being felt around the world. It has been reflected in and overwhelming number of headlines.

The probable cause of the crisis is a depletion of resources. Some people figure we are using resources at a rate that is 150 percent of a sustainable level. This is showing up as a financial crisis.

A further problem is that as a financial crisis it threatens to wipe out a major chunk of the money supply as banks create money when they make loans. This will further restrict our ability to exchange goods and services.

A lot of economists want to deal with the crisis with government stimulus spending. However, if resource depletion is the root problem, then increasing our economic activity will make the crisis even worse. The answer is to try to even out the pain of austerity.

Add to this some historical context:
Nixon's removal of the US dollars'gold standard
Greenspan's refusal to let natural market declines/bankruptcies/etc.
Bernanke trying to emulate Greenspan and his money printing

The biggest story should be WHERE IS THE PRESS/MAIN MEDIA during all of this?

The Arab Spring revolutions, starting in Tunisia, moving to Egypt, then Libya, and finally in Syria.
The Occupation Movement in the United States, Europe and Japan.
The Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan that caused the Fukushima nuclear reactors to meltdown.
That eye-popping number Heidi Klum was wearing.
