Along with upending Canada's federal political landscape, the death of NDP leader Jack Layton also got Canadians on Facebook talking.

According to Facebook Canada's report on most-used terms in Facebook status updates for 2011, the NDP leader was second on the list. The first is the social media call to action "like my status" or "lms", a term that asks Facebook users to "like" an item.

In fact, Layton's death was the top news-related status update topic, eclipsing the death of Osama Bin Laden, the mission in Libya and pop-culture related topics like the DJ Skrillex and Charlie Sheen.

Canada is one of the most active nations on Facebook. According to the service, 18 million Canadians visit Facebook.

The social-networking site also shared its most shared news stories of the year last month.
