Ban Fighting In Hockey, Medical Journal Urges

Fighting in hockey should be stopped because it leads to head trauma that causes progressive brain damage, says an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

"The tragic story of Sidney Crosby's layoff due to concussions has not been sufficient for society to hang its head in shame and stop violent play immediately," Dr. Rajendra Kale, a neurologist and Interim editor of the CMAJ, wrote in an editorial in the journal’s Monday issue online.

Kale says that a ban should be imposed on all forms of intentional head trauma based on new research from the Boston University School of Medicine that shows the presence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of prominent hockey players Rick Martin, Reggie Fleming and Bob Probert.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease, causes memory problems, changes in personality and mood, Parkinson-like symptoms and changes in speech and gait.

Kale cites 2009 research from the same Boston University researchers that revealed CTE in 50 of 70 athletes studied.

"The simple message from the work done by McKee and colleagues is that the brain does not tolerate repeated hits," he writes.

The editorial, "Stop the violence and play hockey," calls on doctors to support a ban and “endorse deterrent penalties in hockey.”

While he acknowledges that hockey fans may take issue with a sport that is less exciting following such a ban, Kale cites the ban on smoking, which has not reduced the number of people frequenting bars and restaurants:

“Instead, the rates of admission to hospital for heart attacks and lung diseases decreased," he writes.

"Should we not stop the violence now and get on with the main objective of hockey, which is scoring goals?" says Kale.

Fights are what make hockey exciting. If they ban fighting in hockey, why won't they ban the UFC or boxing? That causes more intentional head trauma then hockey does. Why not ban hockey all together? After all, someone could slip and fall and get a concussion that way. Someone could accidentally take a stick to the face. Someone could accidentally take a puck to the teeth too. Yup, should ban the whole sport. Or all sports for that matter. Even in tennis, someone could accidentally get hit in the throat with a ball.

So, the sport itself, the actual skills, the goals, the speed, the atmosphere, these aren't exciting? It's the fighting that you watch hockey for?

NFL football has it right; get into a fight and you get ejected. NFL teaches you to respect the rules and the officials.

NHL teaches kids disrespect, fowl language, injure the opposing star player and take a chance.

If you want to watch a fight, watch boxing or any of the other full contact martial sports.
Fighting adds nothing to the game of hockey.
And it sets a bad example for the children who idolize the players.
Where else in life can you assault another person and escape prosecution.

Hockey will survive without fighting, which is more than can be said about those taking part. It's an embarrassment that this is our national sport and too often it turns into a pathetically violent freakshow that has NOTHING to do with playing the game. And it's scary when I hear people say that fighting is part of the game and should stay. What ever happened to skill? Whatever happened to the actual game itself? Does anyone care? Or, do you just follow hockey to see which thug will bash in another thugs brain?
03:43 AM on 12/20/2011
A violent freakshow? C'mon. You know why fighting is a part of the game? Because it's literally a part of the game. Has been for a century. A fight can change the complexion of a building/ game/ series. Look at the highlight reel of injuries sustained this year in the NHL, and NONE of them were from fights. Know what causes more injuries than fighting? Blocking shots. Open ice hits. Skating into players on your OWN team.

It is a skill game. Yes. But, there's a reason these guys are millionaires and we are not. They are willing to put themselves in harm's way for our entertainment. If you are not okay with this scenario, might I recommend the Golf Network?

I'm a huge motorsports fan. I know that accidents and wrecks are part of the of the sport. BUT, in no way do I wish for these to happen, or cheer when they take place. I would much prefer if the sport didn't have accidents and back all efforts by promoters, car builders and racing organizations to improve safety for drivers. And this is what I wish for hockey. What saddens and disgusts me is how, when a fight happens, an arena will erupt in cheers and excitement. To the argument that a fight can change the course of the game...well, YA, no kidding. So can throwing a grenade onto the ice.

You are right, there are plenty of dangers in the sport and brain injury can come from a variety of sources. So, why wouldn't we work to make the game safer for people? Saying that players make millions of dollars and therefore should, in someway, be expected to take hits to the head by someones fist is pretty ridiculous. If you want hockey, watch hockey! If you want to watch people beating the snot out of one another, watch UFC.

While we are at it we should ban fighting in UFC and Boxing, I am sure those blows cause brain damage. Tackling in football also seems problematic, we may also want to ban falling down in general because it too can lead to concussions.

I'd like a ban on fighting, but that won't stop concussions. What they need to ban is hits to the head, and most of those don't come from fights.

Absolutely. it's time the game grew up.

I couldn't agree more, let's get fighting out of the game for good.

Think of the USA-USSR Olympic semi-final in 1980, the Sweden-Canada Olympic final in 1994, the USA-Canada final in 2002, the USA-Canada final in 2010, the countless World Junior championship final games over the last 20 years... they were all played with no fights. Amazing hockey, fun to watch, no cheap shot crap either, just pure hockey from end to end.

And the NHL still wants to keep fighting in the game.

In the words of Jeremy Roenick: "Wake up NHL"

There is also diving in every international hockey event that I can remember, and it's embarrassing not only for the country, but for the sport. Fighting in hockey keeps the game honest in ways other sports can't.
10:57 AM on 12/20/2011
How does a fight keep things honest?

I don't remember a lot of diving at the Olympics at all, in fact, during the last couple of Olympics, they called the few dives people attempted. I dare say it's a pretty generalization and exaggeration to say there is diving at every international hockey event too. Hardly the case at all, you must be watching soccer.
03:12 AM on 12/20/2011
Interesting. Except that NONE of the current concussions including those of Crosby, Giroux and Pronger have ANYTHING to do with fighting.
11:00 AM on 12/20/2011
Doesn't have to be fighting... ban head shots, everything that's not a clean check or hard shot, this crap doesn't need to be in the game (fighting, head shots).

The NHL should suspend a player who injures another player purposely for as long as the injured is out. Players would think twice about taking runs at other players or cheap shots too.

The NHL ISN'T the UFC, it's hockey, drop the violence and the crowds will stay.
01:14 PM on 12/19/2011
I agree, this is the 21st. century and Hockey should be played with no violence. Make the rinks bigger and let players skate and show their skills. Banging up each other and fighting is not very "sportsman like" . What is the game teaching our children? If hockey is clean you will get more people coming to games and more people watching as now it is skill and not the WWE.
There should be a law against fighting, using the stick as a weapon and deliberately causing bodily harm. How many people need to retire or die from the sport before someone says enough is enough? Lets react now and not close the barn door after the horses have left.

You're right. This is long overdue.

Good call, Frank. Let's not rest until hockey looks like tennis. Because THAT'S the game we all fell in love with. Also, I think comparing the NHL to WWE isn't at all hyperbolic. Let's end hockey - for the kids' sake.

"Let's end hockey - for the kids' sake."

I think you have something there...
My favorite time of following hockey was during the season long strike, tv improved, no mind numbing thuggery (hockey that is)

Clean it up or minimalise it to the point of back yard fun (where it belongs)
