Homeless Construction Worker Wins Home For A Year

Dan White Homeless Construction Worker Calgary

For months, construction worker Dan White would put in a long day at his full-time job, only to have no place to go home to.

Now, thanks to a contest, White has a place to stay, rent-free, for a year.

White moved to Calgary last summer but hasn’t been able to afford his own place. He had been sleeping in homeless shelters before a co-worker and a Calgary company helped get him a place of his own.

"I've never been as low as I was this year," said White, interviewed at the downtown construction site where he works.

Despite having a full-time job, the 42-year-old wasn’t able to afford a place of his own — “[a] complete change from everything I've known.”

White's co-worker Amanda Randall knew about his situation and wanted to help.

"He's a good worker, he just needs a hand up," she said.

Earlier this year, Randall entered White's name into a Boardwalk Rental Communities contest to award 12 months of housing to someone without a home.

"Hard working, honest, kind and really generous within himself — but without the wherewithal to put a roof over his head," said Boardwalk’s David McIlveen, explaining why White was chosen.

“When you hear about those kind of people you want to reach out and help.”

White’s new one bedroom apartment came with full cupboards and a fridge. It even has a Christmas tree — with presents underneath.

White loves his new place, but worries about others he says are more deserving.

Randall sees it differently.

"He came here looking for a better life, now he has the opportunity to do whatever he wants, to reach his goals and dreams."

For now, White said he's just getting used to his new place, his queen-size bed and sleeping without earplugs.

Not saying that I am advocating for this, but I can easily foresee a sudden, violent and forced re-distribution of the assets of the very wealthy coming to North America within about a decade or so, and I foresee a very select group of wealthy individuals and their families being rounded up and sent to re-education camps. Not sure how many tears I would shed if it happened.

I rent from Boardwalk for seven years now...they and their staff are great and caring...if you are not good with the tenants and look after their needs, you don't work for Boardwalk. Their rents are reasonable as well, even in Cakgary so when his year is up, I'm sure he'll be able to stay in his new home.

Because of the government, Housing is the most manipulated market in the world:

Due to the massive manipulation, Canada's Housinb Bubble has surpassed the US bubble:

God bless you Mr. White.
Truly.

I wish you didn't have to win a lottery to get a place to live.
I know that isn't the way you wanted to have things turn out.

A general labourer job in construction starts around $18 an hour from the advertising I've seen. I don't know how people live on that kind of money in this city. I don't understand how people with minimum wage jobs survive either . . . and Calgary is not as expensive as some places.

Oil money has made the cost of living in Calgary really high. Mostly high-end properties with little options for apartments and smaller places to live where there are vacancies...

Working FT and can't afford a place to live...........something is wrong with this picture and I am not knocking this guy...................Has anyone heard of "livable wages"?

I wonder how many of his company's executives have summer cottages and winter ski chalets?

You're shooting far too low. the question is - how many of the executives have private jets, Caribbean hideaways, ranches in Arizona and (tax-free) estates in Switzerland?

Trickle down: An essential element of Harper's Economic Action Plan.

Well, now that the magic of the marketplace has solved the problems of the homeless and working poor everybody go back to sleep.

Has a full-time job and can't afford a place to live? Anyone want to claim that our economic system has not sprung a couple of cogs and gears?

I guess it's possible. But if he were, one of the options would be debt consolidation. My understanding of those arrangements is that the creditors accept that the debtor has to be allowed to keep enough to live on, which would include the necessities such as lodging and food. Extremely stressful for the fellow regardless.
