Ok since Prime Minister Harper is is gonna use the Keystone pipeline as a bargaining chip in order to extort from the USA...this pipeline should no way shape, or form be placed on American soil.....sell your shale oil to Asia....if he is doing this now...he will shut it down once constructed on a flimsy whim...I am totally against this now...Canada you can keep your chess piece

The Keystone XL pipeline was not canceled: the decision was postponed, but only because the matter threatened to become a campaign issue.

In order that the pipeline be approved, the correct political climate must exist - and that probably won't happen until after the US Presidential election. Supporters of the pipeline will not be idle during this period - they will marshal their arguments and push heavily on whatever levers to power they possess.

One of their arguments is bound to be: "Look, if we don't buy it, they'll sell it to the Chinese!" and Harper's comments are meant to underline and accentuate that point.

When Harper opens his mouth, you can bet that whatever he says will be pleasant to the ears of the oil industry; unquestionably, these comments on his part express sentiments endorsed by the Oil Patch, and are part of a carefully considered PR strategy; they are aimed not at American legislators, but at American Public Opinion, and Harper's words will be dragged out and made best use of at the appropriate time.

Empty threat....yawn.

Please explain to me: why do we need to ship crude oil to USA’s refineries? - They are selling gasoline made from Canadian oil back to Canada with significant mark-ups in price (I do travel a lot to USA – price for gas is ALWAYS cheaper in there! Oh yeah, they don’t have HST…)
Why cannot we build our own refineries, create new jobs and keep price for gasoline down in Canada? Isn’t price for gasoline one of major factors leading to higher inflation rate?
Just asking… I am not that good in economics… But PLEASE don’t blame Conservative Government. This practise was developed many years ago, has nothing to do with Mr. Harper. Actually, I am glad he expressed his point to Americans even if it will be hard to achieve. At least he has guts to do so!

Hollow threat. Bitumen is much too heavy to send by tanker to China or anywhere else.
Harper's in a panic. He has only one economic card to play - the Alberta tar sands. As things stand, Obama is gonna' win the next election. Harper (a political thug) should keep his mouth shut.

Funny how they can pump it though....
05:32 PM on 12/31/2011
Yes they can pump it, but at much higher pressures than normal crude oil. Harper has made an empty threat. There's no way that British Columbia will allow that pipeline to be constructed across their territory.

Yawn. On the other hand the US should be rethinking NAFTA. A good step would be to put the treaty in abeyance for a few years and fix our ridiculous trade policies.
01:58 PM on 12/20/2011
NAFTA has been as big a curse to Canada as it has to the US. The only ones who benefited were the corporations, who own the politicians, lock, stock and barrel. They've made out like the bandits they are.

why should we care? I hope Canada keeps it in Canada, refines it, and then sticks it wherever they want to. The temporary jobs it would have created would have been more than offset by the danger created by pumping this stuff half a continent away.

Well now isn't that special. Mr. Harper is threatening to ship the oil elsewhere, which was the sole purpose for the pipeline to Texas gulf ports anyway.

Doesn't seem like much of a threat. And as an American that doesn't see any point to the pipeline anyway, I thoroughly encourage, nay, insist that Mr. Harper do exactly that. Good luck on that BC pipeline. Let me know how that works out.

While all I have been seeking was some kind of benefit to America, I'm just going to have to be more active in just saying NO to your pipeline through America. You and your corporations will just have to rape your own Canadian citizens for your profit. We have enough members of the "financial mafia" in the US already.

Canadian citizens, this was your choice for Canada's future? Really?
