VIDEO | Infant heart transplant care warmly recalled

Ten days after David Eusebio was born, he got a new heart.

Now the Victoria resident is a healthy and active 12-year-old, and on Tuesday, he and his mother returned to B.C. Children’s Hospital to give thanks for the care he got there before and after his transplant in California.

It was on Dec. 20, 1999, that his mother, Sonia Eusebio, got some very bad news at the hospital: her unborn son's heart would not survive on its own.

"You're praying for someone's loss to be your miracle,” said Eusebio. “It's a very selfish prayer.”

Now David is a thriving, normal kid.

"Looking at him now, I don’t regret that prayer," his mother said.

The CBC’s Deborah Goble has their story.
