A 16-year-old Ontario boy picked up in Montreal in connection with an armed robbery will be charged in the stabbing death of a man near Waterloo, Ont., a week before.

The teen, who cannot be identified because of his age, was arrested in the Montreal borough of Lasalle on Thursday after allegedly attacking a person on the street.

During their investigation, Montreal police discovered the boy was wanted by authorities in Waterloo Region in connection with the death of 22-year-old Joseph Batten.

Batten was killed in the early morning of Dec. 17 in Cambridge, Ont., after a large fight erupted between two groups of men outside the local Masonic Lodge.

The lodge was the site of a hip-hop concert billed as Hot Friday – Sexy Lady Edition.

Batten was transported to hospital but was later pronounced dead. His cause of death was multiple stab wounds.

Waterloo Regional police have already charged two men from Hamilton with second-degree murder. A Hamilton woman is charged with accessory to murder after the fact.

The 16-year-old arrested in Montreal is also facing a second-degree murder charge. He was transported back to Ontario to make a court appearance Saturday.

Investigators aren’t anticipating any further arrests, Waterloo Regional police said.
