Burnaby Girl Clipped By Truck, Critically Injured

An 8-year-old Burnaby girl has been airlifted to B.C. Children's Hospital in Vancouver after being struck by passing traffic on Island Highway Monday afternoon.

The British Columbia Ambulance Service confirmed the accident happened at 1:45 p.m. PT on the Island Highway near the community of Bowser, approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Nanaimo.

Police said the girl was walking with her family on a bridge over the Qualicum River.

She slipped off a curb, and was hit in the head by the mirror of a passing truck.

The girl went into respiratory arrest and was transported by paramedics to a nearby camp site, where a helicopter landing could be accommodated.

RCMP are investigating the incident.
