OTTAWA - Results of the annual survey of editors and broadcasters conducted by The Canadian Press to determine Canada's top news story of the year for 2011:

The Conservative majority: 25 per cent

Layton's legacy: 24 per cent

Vancouver riots: 12 per cent

Wildfires in Slave Lake: 11 per cent

Occupy movement: eight per cent

Mission in Afghanistan: three per cent

Corruption scandal in Quebec: three per cent

Head shots in hockey: two per cent

Prince William and Kate in Canada: two per cent

The struggles of separatism: two per cent

Keystone XL controversy: two per cent

Research in Motion: one per cent

The NHL returns to Winnipeg: one per cent
