Float plane makes emergency landing near Victoria

A float plane with 12 people aboard had to make an emergency landing off Saltspring Island, B.C., Thursday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

The single-engine Otter operated by Harbour Air lost power on takeoff from Ganges harbour on a 50-kilometre flight to Victoria and had to set back down in the water without power.

One passenger told the Gulf Islands Driftwood newspaper said there was “a big noise” as the plane was taking off.

"It was scary, a bit freaky," said the passenger, Deric Vanstaden.

A Coast Guard Zodiac was quickly on the scene and ferried the passengers back to the dock in Ganges.

Another Harbour Air plane took the passengers to their destination a short time later without incident.
