Aging Slowed In Mice With Supplement Mix

Mouse Aging Study

It might be possible to cure aging, say scientists who've found that lab mice get smarter and more agile as they age when fed a mix of nutritional supplements.

The diet and supplement plan isn't a conventional "cure." But the animal results at McMaster University in Hamilton illustrate how investigators aim to slow down the aging process to avoid the physical and mental declines that often come as more candles are added to the birthday cake.

At Prof. David Rollo's biology laboratory, mice that ate bagel bits soaked in a cocktail of supplements such as B vitamins, vitamin D, ginseng and garlic lived longer than those not taking the special mice chow.

"If you put them on a supplement, they actually learn better as they age," Rollo said. "They still don't live much longer but their brain function is remarkable."

The mice also acted like restless teenagers showing "spontaneous motor function" that fades in humans in a universal sign of aging, Rollo added.

The supplemented mice maintained their memory function in tests, such as remembering a familiar object. Their learning abilities were like those of very young mice, he said. Mice of the same age that were not supplemented behaved in lab tests like a frail 80-year-old woman.

Investigators turned to the cocktail of ingredients based on their suspected ability to offset five key mechanisms involved in aging.

Available at health food stores

The researchers have also doubled the lifespan of crickets using a combination of dietary restriction and supplements, and other investigators have found similar results in other animal models.

Most of the supplements Rollo and his team use are sold at health food stores. But he cautioned they are not something to be toyed with because the cocktail hasn't been tested to see if it is safe for people.

The supplements cross the blood-brain barrier to affect the mitochondria "furnaces" in the brain in a fundamental way, he noted.

Scientists still don't how the supplements actually work and interact in the body.

Live to 1,000?

Like Rollo, British gerontologist Aubrey de Grey of Cambridge is optimistic about the potential to extend human life span, but he takes a different approach. He's not trying to eliminate aging but to extend how long people can be fit and healthy.

"We know that with simple man-made machines like cars and airplanes, we don't have a limit," said de Grey said, who acknowledged that humans are more complicated.

"We can keep these machines going ... just by doing sufficiently comprehensive repair and maintenance reasonably often and that is going to be exactly the same for the human body."

By bringing the molecular and cellular damage that accumulates throughout life under medical control, de Grey suspects that human life spans could be vastly extended.

"If you reach age 26, what is the chance of not reaching 27? The answer is less than one in a thousand. So if you maintain that risk then clearly you [can] live a four-digit lifespan. You will live 1,000 years or more."

Earl Fee of Mississauga, Ont., has a more modest goal: to live to 120.

Fee was a runner in his youth and then stopped for years. He resumed running at the age of 57 and now competes.

"I am 82 but I don't feel much different than when I was 32, so that is a very good feeling," he said.

Earl credited his intense training regime, healthy diet, enjoying a glass or two of red wine before dinner and the fortune of good genes for his vitality.

"Before I ran, I wasn't as energetic or as vibrant," he recalled.

This week CBC News reports on the search for cures for aging, Type 1 diabetes, the common cold, obesity and cancer on CBC Radio One, CBC News Network, The National and at cbc.ca/news/health/.

This post is encouraging but light on the science. I read a lot about life extension, write a bit about it, and am a labraotery on to myself.

My sense is that, beyond genes, the key for longer life will be rooted in supplements, food choices and exercise. The same stuff that makes one healthy irrespective of age. The difference though will be a matter of intensity.

For exceptionally long life, science will need to offer nano bots that clean up biological debris and the like. The kind of things often cited by Ray Kurzweil (his "3 bridges for life extension is here: http://wp.me/pA04z-Cl) and Aubre de Grey (who talks about how the focus needs to be on the cell here: http://wp.me/pA04z-E1 ).

Here's a post on How Exercise Slows the Aging Process which gets into how telomeres are positively affected by exercise: http://wp.me/pA04z-so .

And if you really want to dig deeper, watch Nobel winner Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn present her telomere/longevity research to people at Google: http://wp.me/pA04z-LF

After reading and watching the material linked to in the above links, you'll know much more about how life extension will happen.

Yep.

I just turned 61. I can still bench press 300 on a good day, and my memory is still pretty sharp. My diet is nothing to write home about (I'm eating popcorn as I write this). Thanks, but I'll keep doing what I've been doing all along. Seems to be serving me quite well.

I think supplements do help a lot for different ailments. I take 7-10 and eat a healthy diet, and I hardly ever get sick. I noticed quite a difference when I took Korean ginseng to get rid of my "foggy" thinking. I really helped me a lot. I have blepharitis, and I started taking a combination of lutein and zeaxanthin also which helps control flare-ups.

I am 50yo, have celiac disease, am on a paleo-diet due to the fact that I react to ALL grains, and take up to 30 supplements a day. When I go without as my doctors are always prone to suggesting, I develop difficulty communicating, horrible headaches, fog brain, neuropathy in my hands, face and feet, restless leg, shooting pains down my legs/arms and an impossible pain in my feet, making it hard to walk - all of this within a week of stopping them even though they say my intestines are completely recovered from my disease. I truly believe that almost all the disease processes we face as part of aging can be tied to deficiencies of some kind. .

If you haven't already, get familiar with the work of Dr. Mark Hyman: http://drhyman.com/ His site is rich with useful information because the man seeks to understand root causes and their connections and interplay, as opposed to focusing on symptoms.

I will and thank you for the suggestion.

I'm a fan of supplements, exercise and healthy food. It does matter. I rarely, if ever, take meds and don't rely on doctors. I'm lucky to have a doctor that works with me. Had osteoporosis and took care of that without meds. Walk, walk, walk and green leafy vegs., and calcium supplements with D and minerals that help absorption of calcium. Meds for increased bone density can also be dangerous. Can cause denser but brittle bones. You can do a lot without meds. Type II diabetes can sometimes be controlled with weight and exercise. Heart disease requires the same, good diet, high fiber and lots of exercise. "My doctor says," should be viewed with lots of analysis. He says what he's trained to say, and gives loyalty to the pharma companies. He's virtually a pill vendor. Can you try the natural way first? But, definitely don't with life-threatening illnesses or emergency needs. But think, people, there are alternate ways to cure yourself without resorting to doctors or medicine. Most all meds have side effects. Try to do it naturally but use nutritionists or NDs to help start the process.

I totally agree with the pill vendor part. After my celiac diagnosis, I went from doctor to doctor and all told me I didn't need supplements, that I needed to go off of them. They insisted my neuropathy and neurological problems were not related to my disease and allowed me to languish and get worse under their care. Finally, after a few months, I did my own research into what deficiencies would cause my symptoms and began my 30 vitamins a day regiment with some immediate relief. I changed doctors again and was lucky to find one who noted that the problem was not that I was taking too many vitamins, I was not taking enough! She doubled my daily intake of everything and THAT is what got me back up on my feet again. Now, I am back down to 30 and started to see some problems again so, I might just double up again. Doctors are trained to make their patient dependent upon them for medicines. If I had stayed with my earlier doctors and listened to their advice, I would be on some heavy duty drugs by now. I just thank goodness I eventually took control and started to think for myself.

If it can get rid of the implants, crutches, braces, medicine, doctor bills, aging appearance and chronic pain I'm all for it. No one deserves the suffering that age brings on. Who needs a mind melt with all these new password and electronic gizmos. Where's my wife?

As a amature Herbalist for 20 years I have made discoveries that are beyond question. I have dug up ancient remedies that are still used today to totally control my (agent orange) Diabetes...I have no symptoms.

If your life sucks from Heart Disease...contact me and I'll direct you to where you can get everything you need to take your life back... My "former" Heart doctor told me I had to return every 6 month to have my remaining 2 arteries cleaned...6 months passed and I had tests done from another Heart doctor. It took him 3 shots in a chemical stress test to move my BP off normal, he was amazed. He found my heart had built a new artery, a larger artery to replace the one 100% permanently clogged. I had more blood flow than I needed.

I felt so good and had so much new energy...that I forgot to take it easy on my extremely damage lower back and blew out a disc requiring back surgery...LOL.

When I get back up and around...I plan to make good use of the new life I was given by simple Herbs and Vitamins.... I don't sell anything you want to reverse heart disease, I'll help you and its free.
