Protesters in Toronto tried to disrupt Mayor Rob Ford's New Year's levee on Monday, with one man detained by police.

Hundreds of people attended the event at City Hall for the chance to meet the mayor for a few moments. Most brought warm wishes for 2012, but some citizens delivered angry tirades.

Activists from a group called Stop the Cuts Toronto launched a helium balloon inside the City Hall lobby, with a few people applauding in response.

Protesters also unfurled a "Stop the cuts" banner near the mayor.

Police and security guards moved some the activists who'd gotten close to the mayor, shoving one against a glass wall before detaining him.

The protesters said they were there to tell Ford that any cuts to city services aren't welcome and that they'll be making their voices heard on Jan. 17, the first day of debate during council's final budget process.

Dozens of journalists also arrived to ask questions about a 911 call made from Rob Ford's home on Christmas and about the costs of the Eglinton subway line, which infrastructure magazine ReNew Canada has named the most expensive project in the country, based on total costs including materials and labour.

The mayor's office said Ford is too busy to comment.

Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday told the media that council would be taking all voices into consideration.

“We can’t control the timing on the protests," he said. "I guess people come here to make a point and they’re going to do it in whatever way they can. They certainly want to gets the media’s attention and I guess they did.”

Holyday said the vast majority of the people in attendance were congratulating the mayor.

My grandfather always used to say: "Don't waste your money on a Ford-they're not worth the trouble" If only you knew just how prophetic that statement was Grandpa. (If you're watching from up above , give Grandma a hug from me)

The Vast majority were congratulating him? Why do i have my doubts about that one? The man has ignored what people want, clearly.

I guess the lefty fruitcakes only believe in freedom of speech when it agrees with their failed ideology

What is failed about the policies that made Canada the great country it is today? I know most people in the US call it left. But it is the lefty policies that kept Canada above water during the latest global recession (not the crappy conservative policies - Cons are lucky they got elected on the heels of liberal budget balancing.

So it is con policies that have failed the globe the last decade.

But you must be proud to be apart of a failed ideology.

I don't live in the former USSR or Greece either - funny that it's the capitalist countries with Conservative govts that are doing the best, isn't it? LOL And it was internal bank policy in Canada, not govt policy, that kept them from buying Fannie and Freddie derivatives - sheesh - do some research

Mayor Ford cannot answer calls at this time. He is attending his marriage counselling session. The coulnsellor is explaining to him that calling 911 is not the solution.

(in Great Britain) a public court assembly, held during the day. I guess Mayor Ford simply wanted to grant his people an audience.

was there any ring kissing involved and did Ford say to his wife; "never ask me about my business!"

Toronto needs a Dumb Mayor. The previous smartest in the room Egghead Mayor decided that hiring as many bureaucrats and sleeping workers to sit in idling pickup trucks was the path to riches. We need a Crude Guy (with an Extra back up Brother) who can wield an AXe. MAyor Ford.....just focus on the important stuff....like picking up the garbage, keeping the roads paved and the traffic lights synched.

Wow, from the depths of my heart, which is very deep within my body and therefore very hard to find, I say to you, you barely scrape the bottom of the barrel of humanity. My soul cries out every time a simpleton such a you attempts to vindicate the inviolate. Revolutions have come and gone throughout our history and blunderfcks such as yoo have always been the first to go. Please, when necessary, just stand on a street corner and wave a blue banner; it will make the passing that much quicker.
08:24 AM on 01/03/2012
Calling that guy a simpleton is almost a compliment.
10:04 AM on 01/03/2012
That was quite Poetic. I am impressed. I still like my "Dumb" Mayor. It sounds like you are hoping the Khmer Rouge return.
My trusty Bouvier Tontons will protect me no matter what.

The way to win the hearts of your constituents is to never be too busy to answer the questions of the people.

Mobs don't have questions. Just jeers and taunts. In this case , the people are the mob...... get it ?

Toronto is the broke capital of a bankrupt province. And its citizens consistently voted for the people responsible for both. So yeah get rid of Rob Ford and everything will be fine. .

Uh OK. So Ontario won't be accepting tranfer/equalization payments anymore then ?You know that 3, 261 000 000 $ that the province is supposed to recieve in 2012? Not sure how you fuel the nation when you don't even fuel your own province.

Sadly, Toronto does in a purely speculative manner. They create nothing but their own swindled wealth, so yeah, Yay Toronto.
