Flasher near UBC park prompts police warning

Mounties are issuing a public warning after reports that a man has been exposing himself and masturbating on the trails of Pacific Spirit Park near the UBC campus in Vancouver.

RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said women jogging and riding on trails near 16th Avenue have encountered the individual.

"It is important for women to be vigilant to their surroundings when out in Spirit Park and to never go alone, especially at night. It’s also important to carry a cell phone,” said RCMP Sgt.Peter Thiessen.

"We want to warn the public but also we encourage anyone with any information that may assist us in locating the suspect to call UBC detachment."

Thiessen said police have received five or six complaints in the past month.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man about 30 to 40 years of age, around five feet nine inches tall with a slim build and a deep tan.

Thiessen said anyone who spots the man should call police.

"Don't interact with the individual, don't even acknowledge the fact that it is occurring," he said.

"Continue on as best you can and try to make an immediate 911 call when you feel it is safe to do so. In regards to the location, whatever description they can get and provide that to the local police."
