VANCOUVER - Residents of a small B.C. island are reacting with shock at the news that one of their own has been shot and killed in Mexico.

Robin Wood, a 67-year-old resident of Salt Spring Island, was killed Tuesday during an apparent home invasion in the town of Melaque, south of Puerto Vallarta.

According to media reports, the retired mechanic had been at a concert and returned to the home of a friend, another B.C. man, when the attack happened.

Wolfgang Temmel, owner of Ganges Auto Marine, said he knew Wood for many years and was in "absolute shock" when he heard the tragic news while standing in a lineup at a bank.

"He was as flaky as a good pie crust but just adorable all the same. Very bright person. I don't think anybody disliked him," said Temmel who once employed Wood.

Temmel called Wood "a character" who was always pleasant, happy to see the people he knew, and would take life's difficulties in stride.

Temmel also called Wood a very good mechanic who because of his English accent had to frequently respond to questions about British cars.

"One of his quotes was 'why do people always think I like to work on English cars?'" said Temmel with a chuckle.

In fact, said Temmel, Wood wasn't fascinated with British cars.

Fellow Salt Spring Islander and mechanic Erik Lundstrom shared Temmel's characterization of Wood, saying his former co-worker was known for being upbeat.

"It was just his cheerful attitude, he was always optimistic in life, you know," said Lundstrom.

George Grams, an elected trustee with the Islands Trust, said he didn't know Wood but expects the killing to be a subject of discussion in the tight-knit community.

Grams said Melaque is very popular with islanders, and many locals travel to the Mexican city annually.

I knew Rob Wood back in the 80s when I worked at the Prince of Wales Minischool in the 80's. He lived on Maurel Island at the time. He came to Stathcona park with us and worked as a wilderness guide. One of his "tips" was: "If you ever find yourself on a tight spot, lost or injured or stuck in bad weather, stop and brew yourself a cup of tea. If you can do that, you know you're going to be OK." I think that tip saved my life once when I was stranded alone on the banks of the Cottonwood with a broken leg. Thanks Rob, John Gellard

I have gone to Melaque many times over the years. The group from Saltspring had a band that played at the Maya and Ava restaurants and had a large following. Always felt safe there, some petty crime, purse snatchings etc. This murder has devastated the ex-pat community down there. Part of the problem now is the lack of policing due to the fact that most of the police are off fighting the "war on drugs" in other parts of Mexico. Also the faltering economy and crackdowns in the US has forced many Mexicans to return home to no jobs. All the people (Mexican) I meet in Melaque where polite, helpful, honest and courteous. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Robin Wood.

Very sad. I feel sorry for his family and friends.

Of course the media will make it a headlines issue for days, when things like this happen in Canada or the US they do not get nearly as much attention.

once again. Time to stay away from Mexico. We probably hear just very little of what really goes on there.

Given the numbers of Canadians and Americans in Mexico, there are very few incidents such as this one.
However it is a heart breaker for the family and friends, I feel so sad for them.

There are a lot more "incidents'', that are never reported. Some of my friends that have been going there for quite some time notice a huge change in how they are treated.Constantly badgered for money, to buy things , rude remarks, shoving , etc. One of my friends was grabbed by her Buttocks, and severely bruised by a teenager, when she wouldn't give him two tips for opening a Cab door. Prostitutes hounding people. This is in Puerto Vallarta. "A nice safe place". I don't care what any one else does, I choose to go somewhere and spend my hard earned money where I am welcome.
