Victim identified in fatal bus accident

A 79-year-old woman who died after being struck by a small passenger bus in Carlingford, N.B., on Sunday has been identified as Irina Konioukhova, of Montreal.

Her 50-year-old son, who was also struck, remains in critical condition at the Saint John Regional Hospital, RCMP Sgt. Marc Violette stated in a news release.

The pair was walking along Route 190 about 7:20 p.m. when they were both struck by the bus, which was headed toward Perth-Andover, Violette said.

It is believed they were struck from behind as they were walking with the traffic flow, he said.

Konioukhova died as a result of her injuries. Her son, who is also from the Montreal area, but whose name has not yet been released, suffered life-threatening injuries.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, but police have said they don't believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. It was dark and the highway was slushy at the time, officers have said.
