Blue Bombers name new CEO

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have named Garth Buchko as president and CEO of the football club.

The former radio executive — general manager of CJOB, Power 97 and Groove FM — begins the job on March 1.

Board chair Bill Watchorn said there was more than 70 candidates for the job.

"We chose Garth for his tremendous leadership skills and his excellent sales, marketing and branding strengths. He has a great deal of experience at the executive level,” Watchorn said.

Ossama AbouZeid has been serving as interim CEO since July.

The position has been in flux since Lyle Bauer resigned in December 2009 as the president and CEO of the club.

At that time, the club decided to separate the two roles and Jim Bell became the interim president. He was handed the permanent reigns in February 2010.

On Thursday, the club said it was merging the roles again.

Bell will remain in a senior management position, but the exact nature of that is still being worked out.
