Ottawa man accused of killing wife too sick for court

An elderly Ottawa man facing first-degree murder charges in his wife's death was still too ill to appear in court Thursday.

Ian Flann, 82, is charged with killing his high-school sweetheart, Doreen Flann, also 82, at the Longfields Manor retirement home.

Doreen's body was found with stab wounds on Boxing Day in the home at 330 Beatrice Dr. in Barrhaven.

Officers found both Flanns injured, Doreen fatally. Ian was taken to hospital.

Flann's lawyer Solomon Friedman filed the 60-day evaluation Dec. 30. But Flann's doctor said he was in no condition to be transported to court or assessed. His condition had not improved enough to appear this week, either.

Flann, who was wheeled into a hospital room Dec. 28 and read the charges, remains in hospital under police watch.

The court was told Flann continues to undergo diagnostic procedures. The case was adjourned to Monday but Flann is not expected to appear.
