Churches in eastern Nova Scotia are no strangers to hard times. Attendance is dwindling. The population is declining. And they inhabit one of the most economically disadvantaged regions of the country.

It's Sunday morning. If you are Catholic and fed up with the Church's lack of responsibility regarding predatory priests, print out a copy of this article and drop it in the collection plate. Then don't go back. You could add a note to it explaining why you will no longer be attending, but they will get the picture.

The one problem here is that individual churches who are assigned pastoral staff from a hierarchal structure lifts much of the responsibility from those churches to those in charge of the assignments. In other denominations where an individual congregation does the hiring of pastors and priests, responsibility lies solely with that congregation for the actions of its staff. That's just how it is.

So, from the diocese on up to the Vatican, their responsibilities include reparations and should not necessarily include punishing a congregation by selling its building and assets.

I feel for the people, but this change may be leading to something better. The control that the church has had over everything from money to parishes and funds is astounding. Maybe through this, the church will lose some of that control and parishioners will actually start to take care of themselves.

What is disturbing is the fact that the Bible warns against harming children, yet these sick people, that are supposed to protect them, actually harm these kids psychologically and physically.

If they don't get justice here they will get it when they die.
