WINNIPEG - Critics are asking the Manitoba government to reject a proposed peat mine in a Manitoba provincial park.

Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard says provincial parks are no place for mining, and the operation would destroy an important wetland.

Eric Reder, with the non-profit group Wilderness Committee, says the area plays a key role in protecting the water quality of Lake Winnipeg.

Sun Gro Horticulture has put forward a plan for a 531-hectare mine in Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park.

The provincial government is examining the plan and is seeking public input until next month.
