Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma says Crosby was set join the team for Wednesday's game against the Washington Capitals.
He was in the press box wearing a jacket and tie during the game at the Verizon Center.
Bylsma adds Crosby will skate on his own during team's three-game road trip and that there is no timetable for his return.
Crosby missed nearly 11 months of action because of a concussion before returning in November.
The 24-year-old superstar last played on Dec. 5 against Boston and the Penguins said at the time he was dealing again with concussion-related problems.
The news comes as the injury-riddled Penguins continue to slide down the Eastern Conference standings. Heading into Wednesday night's game, the Pens had lost five straight and sat in eighth place with 46 points from 41 games.
Pittsburgh is also without defenceman Kris Letang (concussion) and centre Jordan Staal (knee).Suggest a correction
