VANCOUVER - A senior B.C. Mountie has been charged with theft, suspended from duty and lost his badge and gun over allegations he stole and used drugs.

RCMP Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela said Staff Sgt. Stuart Seib was arrested Tuesday and more charges are anticipated.

Seib was the detachment commander in Merritt, B.C., which is located about 267 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

"I understand that news like this is very concerning," said Sekela, in a statement released Wednesday evening.

"As the officer in charge of all the detachments in the southeast district, these actions do not meet my expectations or those of the public."

Sekela said police became aware Friday that Seib had allegedly stolen and used drug exhibits, and over the weekend senior investigators audited all the exhibits under Seib's control.

Sekela said Seib's privileges and access to RCMP facilities have been revoked and the force is looking at suspending Seib without pay.

Sekela said he has met with community leaders and is confident detachment employees are dedicated to keeping the community safe.

The allegations against Seib have yet to be tested in court.
