Man shot outside Oakville police station

Two people were shot and killed in Oakville on Thursday. Police will not confirm if there is any connection.

A man was shot dead in the parking lot of an Oakville police station before noon. Police have not released the man's name.

Police are also investigating a second shooting death.

A woman was killed at an address on Treetop Terrace, also in Oakville.

Police have identified her as Katherine Newman, 43, of Oakville.

Sources have told CBC News police believe the two deaths are related.

The first shooting involving police happened at around 11:30 a.m. outside the 20 Division headquarters of the Halton police station near 6 Line and Dundas Street.

A police cordon was thrown up around the parking lot where a body could be seen lying beneath a tarp in the parking lot.

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates any time there is a death or serious injury involving police, is conducting the investigation.

“[Police] wouldn’t give us any more details ... but we did speak with one witness who was just across the street and who heard gun shots and saw paramedics working on the body," said CBC reporter Marivel Taruc.

A spokesman for Halton regional police said officers confronted a man causing damage in the parking lot of the station. During the altercation the man was shot.

No police officers were injured.
