Quebec woman accused of killing daughter dies

A Quebec woman charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter has died.

Quebec Provincial Police confirmed Kathrine Dufresne, 53, of Chelsea, Que., died Wednesday night. Dufresne was found Wednesday morning unconscious in the shower at the Hull jail after she attempted suicide.

On Monday Dufresne had been found fit to stand trial in the Oct. 22 death of her seven-year-old, adopted daughter Sophie.

Dufresne had just undergone a 30-day psychiatric examination.

On Monday, a judge ordered Dufresne to be transferred to a Montreal facility where she was to be put under surveillance. She was at Hull jail awaiting that transfer when the incident occurred.

She was scheduled to return to court on Feb. 28.
