Speed blamed for fatal B.C. crash

A 53-year-old Surrey man is dead after a crash on Highway 1 Friday night.

Police were called to the scene — near the Alexandra tunnel near Spuzzum, B.C. — at about 8 p.m. PT.

Police say a car was travelling west on Highway 1 when it failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle entered a ditch, flipping over several times before stopping on its roof in the centre of the roadway.

The driver and lone occupant of the car was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"It is important for the public to understand the impact of speeding," said RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen in releasing a photo of the crumpled 1997 Toyota Camry.

Police say alcohol and drugs do not appear to have contributed to the crash.

The victim's name has not been released.
