Saint-Léonard motel fire injures one

A woman was badly burned and about 100 people were forced to flee after a fire broke out in a motel in Montreal's Saint-Léonard borough early Sunday morning.

Montreal police said the fire began at around 6:30 a.m. at the Excel Motel on Jarry Street.

A 40-year-old woman was found unconscious when firefighters arrived and had to be rescued though a second floor window. She is suffering from smoke inhalation and second degree burns, police said.

About 40 firefighters helped put out the fire, and the investigation has been turned over to the arson squad.

Most of the people staying at the motel are long-term residents. It's not yet known where they will go.
