Ottawa strip club fire called arson

An early morning fire at Barbarella's Cabaret in downtown Ottawa has been called arson after fire crews found a sledgehammer and gas cans at the scene.

The CBC's Karen Kelly reported that police had a man in handcuffs in front of the strip club around 8 a.m. Monday, about three hours after the call came in around 4:50 a.m. for a small fire in the foyer.

Firefighters got the fire at Barbarella's, at 340 Queen St. near Lyon Street, under control within the hour. But the water from the fire hose caused frozen ponds on sidewalks and roads, requiring crews to break up the ice.

That prompted the closing of Queen between Bay and Lyon streets, but the road reopened just before 6:30 a.m.

There are no injuries from the fire. Total damage is not yet known.

Queen Street was also closed Sunday between Lyon and Kent streets due to a broken water main.
