Canadians will have new stamps to commemorate the Queen's 60 years as monarch — though it will cost 61 cents to use them.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston announced the new stamps to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth's accession, at the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que., Monday.

Students from Ottawa's Queen Elizabeth Public School were on hand for the announcement. Johnston talked about the Queen's long history with Canada, which began when many of the students' grandparents were themselves children.

Marjory LeBreton, government leader of the Senate, told the students that she was 13 years old at the time of the Queen's coronation — the first time LeBreton saw a television.

Canada Post announced new postal rates for 2012 last year that raise the basic letter rate to 61 cents from 59 cents, effective Monday.

The jubilee stamps include a basic letter rate stamp as well as other commemorative collectible stamps and booklets.
