The RCMP are seeking a potential witness after an off-duty officer crashed a vehicle on Sunday night, possibly while impaired.

Investigators say the off-duty officer was involved in a single vehicle accident around 10:45 p.m. on Highway 1 in Surrey, in the area of the 160th St overpass.

The witness being sought is the driver of a black Volvo, who the RCMP believes may have seen the incident and left the scene before police arrived.

Sgt Peter Thiessen says they will release the name and detachment of the RCMP officer involved, if and when charges are laid.

"Certainly when it appears that the possibility exists that one of our officers was impaired that resulted in a crash, it's very concerning, but it still remains to be seen whether charges will be laid and whether the officer was impaired."

Witnesses should contact RCMP Sgt Dave Savoy of the Port Mann Freeway Patrol at 604-762-0148.
