Vancouver police have recommended 63 new charges against 20 new suspects in the Stanley Cup riot.

The new charges mean police have recommended a total of 278 charges against 100 suspected rioters. Some 85 of those suspects are men, while 15 are women.

Although police have recommend charges, they must be approved by Crown prosecutors, before the cases proceed to court. So far the Crown has approved 78 charges against around three dozen suspects.

Most of the people are residents of Surrey or Vancouver and are facing charges of participating in a riot, mischief and breaking and entering.

Between 500 and 700 people could eventually face charges, according to Insp. Les Yeo, who is leading the complex police investigation.

"My message is very clear and very simple to the rioters: if you thought we have given up —we have not — we are here for the victims and we will be coming to get you," said Yeo.

The riot tore through downtown Vancouver after the Canucks lost Game 7 in the Stanley Cup final on June 15 against the Boston Bruins.

Hundreds of people spent hours torching cars, smashing windows and looting stores in the downtown core, causing millions of dollars in damage.
