Toronto police are looking for a suspect after someone tried to grab an 8-year-old girl in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood.

The girl told police she was getting off a bus on Yorkwoods Gate on Monday at about 3:55 p.m. when a man grabbed her arm.

Const. Wendy Drummond said the girl was able to get away and gave a detailed description to investigators.

Drummond said the suspect is described as male, black, with a medium build and moustache, in his 30s, about six feet tall, last seen wearing black pants and "a black hooded sweatshirt with some type of skull and crossbone design on it and red-and-white, Jordan-style running shoes."

The principal of Yorkwoods Public School sent home a letter to families saying that the incident didn't involve one of its students but that the school takes an active interest in neighbourhood safety.

"I want to emphasize again to all our students, staff and parents the need to be aware and alert at all times, no matter where you are and even in the most ordinary and everyday routines," the letter from Mark Babiy says.

The letter also included streetproofing tips, including reminders to travel with at least one other person whenever possible, avoiding shortcuts, and walking in well-lit and well-travelled areas.

Police are asking for anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
