VIA trains running again after person hit near Belleville

VIA Trains along the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal corridor are running again after a passenger train travelling from Montreal to Toronto struck a person near Belleville, Ontario.

Train traffic between Ottawa and Toronto was temporarily blocked while police investigated the fatal accident on the track.

At about 2:10 p.m. VIA Train 57, travelling from Montreal to Toronto, struck and killed a pedestrian about a kilometre west of Belleville, according to VIA Rail spokesman Malcolm Andrews.

It's not yet clear what caused the collision or who the victim was.

Passengers from two trains —one from Ottawa and one from Montreal — had to disembark at Kingston and bus to Toronto.

Many people travelling to Toronto from Ottawa and Montreal had opted to take the train, anticipating that a winter storm would make flying difficult.

The tracks reopened at about 3:40 p.m.
