Rideau Canal closes amid freezing rain warning

Ottawa and parts of eastern Ontario are under a freezing rain warning for Monday afternoon, which has also closed the Rideau Canal.

The 7.8-kilometre-long ice surface will be shut down temporarily because of the poor ice conditions that result from warmer than normal temperatures.

The freezing rain is expected to change into rain later in the afternoon as temperatures continue to warm.

The National Capital Commission had just extended the open stretch of skateway to 4.4 km, between the Bank Street Bridge and National Arts Centre, on Saturday.

The NCC hopes to reopen the ice surface in the coming days. For updates on the ice conditions call 613-239-5234 or go online.

Winterlude, which relies on the canal for attracting tourists, runs from Feb. 3 to 20. The NHL All-Star Game also has events planned for the canal next week.
