Alex Goligoski received a four-year contract extension worth $18.4 million US from the Dallas Stars on Monday.
The 26-year-old Goligoski was acquired before last year's trade deadline from Pittsburgh in a deal that saw forward James Neal head to the Penguins.
He has scored five goals and 10 assists in 36 games with a minus-6 rating.
"Alex is a character person and one of the anchors of our blue-line," general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said in a statement. "He’s a big part of our hockey club."
For his career, Goligoski has compiled 33 goals and 87 assists in 236 career games, with a plus-28 rating. Of his 120 points, 45 per cent have come on the power play.
The five-foot-11 defender was selected in the second round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Penguins. He played three seasons at the University of Minnesota.
The Stars have dropped five in a row to fall to 11th in the West. They play their final game for the NHL All-Star break Tuesday against Anaheim.
