The recent attack on Calgary's Sheila Nabb at a luxury resort in Mexico reminded Canadians that one of their favourite tropical getaways isn't always safe.

Each year, around 1.5 million Canadians head to Mexico's many beaches and resorts and while most of them come home with memories and a tan, some are unfortunately hurt or worse. Growing violence related to the drug trade has made many parts of the country unsafe and each year thousands of Mexicans are killed in drug-related crimes.

The slideshow below looks at Canadians who were murdered or seriously hurt in Mexico.

I would be interested to see the statistics for Canadians travelling to other countries worldwide and not just Mexico. Presented this way it looks very negative, but compared to other places is it more dangerous? similarly dangerous? not very dangerous? Obviously some of these people are innocent victims, but are there connections between some of them and things such as drugs, sex, extortion or other things that often lead to demise especially in foreign countries? North Americans tend to think see the world as their playground wherever they go and the reality of our world is that that is not a safe way to travel.
