Vancouver's mayor and city council are pushing for changes in the way municipal elections are held across B.C.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says the current rules are outdated and it's time the province made the voting process more fair and transparent.
But Robertson acknowledges any changes to municipal election procedures have to be made by the provincial government.
"They said they would look at approving online voting by 2014,” Robertson said. “We want the campaign finance piece to be addressed. That’s always a concern given its lag behind the provincial and federal rules."
Vancouver Coun. Andrea Reimer has proposed several measures to update elections in Vancouver, including banning union and corporate donations, and imposing annual spending limits on candidates and parties.
She also wants to see full disclosure of donations and expenses.
Robertson says adopting Reimer’s suggestions would make for fairer elections with more candidates able to get involved.
