Ottawa Humane Society: Cat In Dumpster The Work Of 'Horrific' Abuser

The Huffington Post Canada   First Posted: 01/26/2012 6:53 pm Updated: 01/26/2012 8:55 pm

The hunt is on for an animal abuser after a particularly gruesome find in an Ottawa dumpster.

Last Friday, a passer-by came upon a dead Calico cat in a garbage bin near a Morisset Ave. apartment building in the nation's capital. Its legs had been bound with electrical cord. Subsequent tests revealed the five-year-old animal had suffered a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding — as a result of being beaten to death.

“There were organs that were split in half, indicating it was beaten with some sort of stick or something like that,” Miriam Smith of the Ottawa Humane Society told the Ottawa Sun.

"It appears that it would have been hung by its back legs, and beaten to death.”

The OHS is currently trying to trace the owner of the cat, which appears to have been cared for at some point in time — although the absence of identifiable markers makes it a challenge.

Officials say this may be one of the most disturbing animal torture cases that has ever come to light. In fact, cruelty on this magnitude, Smith said, would likely warrant a criminal charges and as many as five years in jail.

There are currently no leads in this case.

“I think the public should be appalled that this has happened,” the humane society's Mandy Chepeka told the Ottawa Citizen.

“We’ve checked the OHS Lost records and there are no reports of a lost cat matching its description, so we’re looking for any information that will lead us to the owner of the deceased cat as well as whoever is responsible for this horrific abuse,” Miriam Smith added in an OHS press release.

The OHS is urging anyone with information about this case of 'horrific abuse' to call 613-725-3166.

A "monster" that would kill an innocent animal in this horrific way, is a real DANGER to the human race !!!

Sickening and disgusting. Time for Canada to "overhaul" those animal welfare laws. 5 years to rehabilitate this person to live in society again? I don't think so.

Appalling, it's totally disgusting. This "animal" should be bound and have to endure the torture they inflicted on this defenseless cat. I hope someone will come forward and identify this monster.

I never let my cat out because of things like this happening. Cats are also susceptible to getting hit by cars etc. My last cat lasted for 22 years and if I had let her out she probably would have lived three years tops because she was far too curious and had no fear. She learned to enjoy being inside and had a very happy contented life.

This is one of the reasons I never let my cat out. After a while they get used to being inside and actually seem happier then if they were out roaming around. I believe I read somewhere the average age of a cat left outside in the city is three years-whatever the figure indoor cats live a lot longer. My former cat lived to be 22 before she passed.

People, who attack small defenseless animals like this, don't deserve to live.

OMG, this is awful, I can't read the whole thing. I will never understand anyone who harms innocent life. I love my cat and she loves me, showing me everyday with her actions of affection.

A person that would do this to an animal belongs in a mental institution. One day they will go even farther with their evil, the victim? A human.

I would simply do to these creeps what they do to the animals with no apology

I don't know about Canada, but this type of cruelty happens frequently in the US. During my 26 years in animal rescue, I've seen worse and even when the perpetrators are identified and it happened in a state that actually prosecutes animal cruelty, the most they ever get is community serice and a fine. The article says "5 years" if someone gets convicted. If that's true, than Canada is a cut above our country.

Sadly, Canada's animal welfare laws are very archaic and need an overhaul, IMO.

This just makes me sick inside when something like this happens, and they say that if this sick person is caught they could get 5 years i just hate it when the media speculats things like this ,it would be so nice if it were to happen like they say,if caught you might if lucky see jail time i am just sick of all way's hereing the what if's.If i were to catch this person lets just put it this way they would never do it again, simple as that. The way that the innocent are treated in this world is appalling man kind i am severely heart to be a member of this species.

The truth is NOT halfway between right and wrong

I'm sorry, but I truly feel that those who hurt the MOST DEFENSELESS among us - children, the elderly, the disabled and animals - should suffer the MOST SERIOUS consequences. And yet our justice system seems to be the opposite - giving stiffer sentences to those who harm other adults. It doesn't make sense and we should change it. We all know what this type of behavior leads to.

Our animal cruelty laws are a sad joke.

An attempt to toughen them was defeated by lobbyists for farmers and hunters, claiming that they could be prosecuted under the new laws.

My response to such reasoning is that if you are such a lousy farmer or hunter that you have reason to fear this, then you should cease to be a farmer or hunter because you are terrible at what you are doing.

If this really outrages you then call your MP. Email them. Call Stever-ino and tell him to get up off his butt and reintroduce these laws. Call the NDP. Call the liberals. Make a nuisance out of yourself. The more people who do so who are not affiliated with any organization, the less the Harperites can claim "specialized interests".

And when the real special interests, hunters, farmers, meat packers, et al do complain, tell them that if they do their jobs properly, they've got nothing to worry about.

If he had done that to a child, he would have been put away for life.

But because it's just a cat, it's just five years... which means two if he acts real nice while behind bars.

Yeah, we got our priorities all worked out here.

humans make me sick. this is what we get for thinking every life is worth something. all animal, elderly and child abusers need to be locked away forever so they can't breed. let's stop thinning out our gene pool with these messed up losers. remember, almost every psycho serial killer starts with animals and eventually moves up to people. 5 years? try life...
