Forget ordering pizza and labelling your colourful bags of Doritos as menu options for your Super Bowl get together this weekend. This year with our help, you can decorate your home and try simple recipes that will make your party actually feel like one. We talked to stylist and event planner Lu Curran of Style By Lu in Toronto, on how to plan the perfect game-day event that will leave your guests full, inspired and possibly, sleeping on your couch.
"By planning early, you give guests enough notice to plan their schedules so that they can attend, and you will be able to get all the shopping and cooking done well in advance. Super Bowl parties are usually more casual in nature -- especially because the 'big game' takes place on a Sunday and most people have to work on the Monday."
Here are some of Curran's appetizer ideas for your Super Bowl party.
"I always say stick with appetizers -- they are easy and quick to cook or heat up. I prefer to enlist my guests with adding their touch to the party by bringing their favorite appetizer; instead of leaving all the pressure on the host to provide food for the entire party," says Lu Curran. Read the chili recipe here.
Adding chicken wings and ribs at your Super Bowl party is an open invitation for a messy but tasty appetizer dish. Tip: Create smaller bowls of several wing sauces to diversify the flavour -- and introduce new ones. Read the recipe here.
Who wouldn't want bite-sized portions of one of the best comfort foods? Creating these mini savoury treats will be a hit at any Super Bowl party. Tip: Use blends of different cheeses. Read the recipe here.
Chips and dip -- another Super Bowl classic. Try guacamole as a kid-friendly dish with a touch of chile. Tip: Guacamole works great as a dip but is also tasty with tacos, or even a side with cheese. Read the recipe here.
Want to really make it a Super Bowl party? Bring the tailgate feel that every sports fan loves and start up the BBQ with some hot dogs, sausages, and burgers on the grill. Tip: Let your guests dress grilled favorites by creating a toppings bar with all the faves.
Learn how to make your own taco salad. Tip: If you are looking to stay on the healthy side (it is possible), this Super Bowl season try turkey or soy meat instead.
2 ounces Hypnotique 1 Ounce Vodka 2 Ounces White Cranberry I will be preparing this drink for my guests in a beverage container so that you can make many drinks all at one time. I would keep a separate jug of The Brady Punch pre-mixed so that you easily re-fill the jug when you start getting low.I plan on creating a beverage bar; my signature drink being the focus and beers hanging on the field around it. To decorate the bar I will be buying some astro turf as the bar runner and will be spray painting the field coordinates on it.
Now that you have a menu under the belt, Curran's decor tips will add the finishing touches for your living room.
"The bar is usually a statement piece -- especially for a Super Bowl party. Next, my toppings bar and appetizers are always full and colourful. I like to create signs -- in team colours, of course -- so that guests know what each item of food is, especially with all the dietary concerns out there today.
"Having your guests wear their favourite team’s jersey or team colours will add to the decor. I would have blank Bristol board available for your guests to create their own signage for chirping each other or cheering for their favourite team. Set your living room up so that viewing the TV is easily accessible for everyone -- even if that means moving your TV to another area of your house."
Oh look, it's the Super Bowl party for the 1 per cent.
