Shafia Trial Verdict: Honour Killing Hurts Image Of Canada's Muslims

TORONTO - The Shafia murder trial has cast a shadow over Canada's Islamic community, further tarnishing an image that has not yet recovered from the events of 911.

Muslims across the country, however, say the revelations in a Kingston, Ont., courtroom have shone a light on problematic aspects of their culture and illuminated new ways to tackle the issues.

For months Muslims say they've recoiled in horror at testimony alleging three members of the Shafia family plotted the deaths of four others in what prosecutors describe as an attempt to restore family honour.

The crown alleged three teenage Shafia sisters were killed after bringing shame upon the family by dating, shunning traditional religious garb and skipping school. The fourth victim, the family patriarch's first wife in a polygamous marriage, allegedly endured years of abuse and feared for her life in the weeks before she died.

Justice Robert Maranger, who presided over the case, noted Sunday how difficult it is to conceive of a crime more "despicable," "heinous" and "honourless."

"The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honour...that has absolutely no place in any civilized society."

Crown attorney Gerard Laarhuis suggested the verdict is a reflection of Canadian values and ultimately a rejection of those where freedom is denied.

"This verdict sends a very clear message about our Canadian values and the core principles in a free and democratic society that all Canadians enjoy and even visitors to Canada enjoy," he said.

Rona Ambrose, Canada's minister for status of women, took to Twitter to comment: #Shafia. Honour motivated violence is NOT culture, it is barbaric violence against women. Canada must never tolerate such misogyny as culture."

While many Muslims blanch at the term "honour killing," believing it to be a misrepresentation of the faith they practice, they say the deaths of the four Shafia women reveal the need to take a stronger stand against domestic violence in the community.

Days before Mohammad Shafia, his son Hamed and his wife Tooba Yahya were each found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder, one Ontario city launched a program meant to stop such slayings from taking place in the future.

The Family Honour Project, launched by the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration in London, Ont., is an initiative specifically targeting the sort of violence that allegedly took place in the Shafia home.

Centre board member Saleha Khan said plans for the project were afoot long before the case came to trial, but said the story has given the initiative even more urgency.

Despite the fact that honour-based violence occurs in many different cultures besides Islam, the stereotypes revived by coverage of the Shafia trial could further isolate Muslim women, she said.

"It's really turned into an us vs. them," Khan said in a telephone interview. "It's basically created that kind of divide where...now, because of the kind of savagery that's been painted on that, people who possibly would be victimized won't come forward."

The program aspires to end honour-based violence by providing culturally tailored support for the victims and changing the behaviours of the perpetrators. The local initiative forms part of a broader call to action that went out coast to coast late last year.

Islamic religious leaders banded together last December to denounce honour killings from the country's mosques and educate Muslims about the call for gender equality at the heart of their faith.

Syed Soharwardy, a Calgary-based imam who founded the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, said the Shafia case galvanized the community to address uncomfortable issues that too often get swept under the carpet.

Despite the fact that "honour killings" are explicitly condemned in the Qur'an, Soharwardy said such values sometimes take root in remote regions of Muslim countries where education is limited and scriptural doctrine is misinterpreted.

Imams were forced to speak out not only to protect their female followers from harm at home but to defend their religion from unjust vilification in the rest of Canada, he said.

The actions of one misguided family single-handedly revived stereotypes of violence and intolerance that have dogged the community since 911, he said.

"(Domestic violence) is not an epidemic. Once in a while we come across this," he said. "It puts a bad name in Islam, it creates a very negative image of Muslims, and it provides opportunities to Islamophobes to reignite hate against Muslims and badmouth our religion."

Community-based efforts, such as those launched by the imams, are the only effective way to combat honour-related crimes, according to one sociologist.

Aysan Sev'er, a professor at the University of Toronto specializing in the study of violence against women, said crimes involving a family's reputation must be treated differently from more conventional slayings.

Honour-based violence is communal in nature, she said, since it involves deep-rooted social traditions and extensive collaboration with others.

"There's a community component both in terms of putting pressure on the people and later on trying to justify, whitewash it, reduce the severity and so on," she said.

Experts agree the issues raised in the Shafia case have touched off dialogues that could have long-term benefits for the Muslim community.

Soharwardy said the trial's silver lining has come through conversations with women and youth that may once have been taboo.

"It motivates me to reach out to youth and women and those who are oppressed in their home," he said. "It gives you hope as well that after such tragedies, people do learn some lessons."

"Honor killings take place in remote areas of Muslim countries" . . . Saudi Arabia is not a remote area, it is standard, accepted practice, as it is anywhere Shiria law is practiced or where the Taliban is in control.

Syed Soharwardy, the Calgary Immam, claims that "honor killing is explicitly condemned in the Quaran. Yet the stoning of adulteress women to death is enshrined in the Shaaria laws. Is this not "honour killing"? The stoning of women continues to be applied in several Muslim countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The issue, which is of concern to the citizens of Canada and its Government is the failure of most immigrants to get assimilated into the Canadian system and society. It is not without a reason that the French government has issued laws against all symptoms of religious manifestations, including the wearing of hijab and crosses in public places.

In my experience, MOST Muslims are awesome, clean-living, hard working, peaceful and intelligent people who strive to do the best for their families and communities. Just like MOST Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc.

There are extremists and bad seeds, domestic abuse and horrible family dynamics in every religion. Ask yourself what the religion is of most of the murderers in Canada. Does it even matter>

The vast majority of Muslims in Canada should feel very comfortable that virtually all Canadians, of all backgrounds, were outraged at the murder of 4 muslims family members in this country.
I wonder if 4 Christians were murdered in any of the primarily Muslim countries, such as Eygpt, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakisatn, etc, if there would be such a nation-wide outrage.

At the same time Canadians condemn the concept of "honor" killings, they must extend a welcoming hand to Muslims who obey the law and are, either presently or potentially, good citizens. Don't paint all Muslims with the same brush, judge people as you find them. This is what being a free society is all about.

just off the top, without much background in this family event, i'd say one thing this means to canada's muslims is that your honor killings are considered actionable murders in the West. so find another way to reprimand your children.

There are hundreds if not thousands of Muslim people in Canada who are just as outraged about this murdering family as the rest of us. I applaud the Muslim community in all their efforts to abort such a heinous crime from ever taking place in our country again.

Yes, the Koran has many violent verses just like our own Christian bible:

According to the book of Leviticus, God promises that if the Israelites disobey him: "I myself will punish you seven times over for your sins. Instead of meat you shall eat your sons and your daughters."[111

After the Israelites found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath, the Lord said, "The man must be put to death; he must be stoned by all the community. . . ."[118] God also ordered the death penalty for anyone else who works on the Sabbath.[119

God endorsed a type of mutilation: The book of Proverbs says "the subversive tongue will be cut out."[141]

The New Testament: In a parable involving servants waiting for their lord to return from a wedding, Jesus taught that the servant who knew his lord's will but failed to do it "will be flogged severely." And he explained that the servant who didn't know his lord's will but "earned a beating will be flogged less severely."[152]

Jeremiah says God promised to make an end to the people of Judah by "sword, with famine and pestilence."[50] And the Lord pledged to do the same to any nation that would not submit to his "servant" Nebuchadrezzar, the Babylonian king.[51]

For an out of control son the Lord directed that "all the men of the town shall stone him to death, and you will thereby rid yourselves of this wickedness."[121]

Hi Everyone,
Only God can Judge these family members. They are the one and God or who really knows if they did the killings or not. Maybe there is a real killer(s) out there still at large who did the killings and not the family members. You never know if it is one of the girl's boyfriend who actually did the killings. Maybe these girls may have other boyfriends and one of them just got jealous and decided to hurt this family by performing these killings. Maybe the police and other investigators need to investigate the girls boyfriends. I will leave this to the Police and other investigators to look into this. It is worth looking into. How many times someone has been accused of a serious crimes or something when in fact the real it is far from the real truth. The real killer(s) could still be out there and must be laughing himself or themselves off at this. Police and Investigators go do your job.

This decision has established a precedent. This unfortunately happens too often. Too many women disappear and there is no remorse for "honor killing". Canada has a large population of these radicals in B.C. No matter what men do it is not subjected to any "dishonor". I sincerely hope that these crimes will be reported and prosecuted in the courts. These people should not enter countries without being made to accept our laws. Their treatment of girls is obscene. I have a friend of this same religion that did leave to go to university and has a career. She moved away about 4 years ago and is still frightened and always looking over her shoulder. What a life.
This culture must not be allowed to flourish but the problem is they live in very tight communities with their same culture and do band together. Sharia law is an abomination. When girls born and brought up in Canada or the US are subjected to this it is truly frightening.

I would like to know why the Muslim Student's Association of Concordia in Montréal was promoting this Extremist Muslim film? Thankfully, due to public outrage, the film was not shown at Concordia but it was shown in Laval on the North Shore of Montreal and also in Toronto I think. The Muslim Student's Association cleaimed innocence ? I find that hard to believe.

Honour killing is NOT a Muslim idea. So called "honour killings" (aka violence against women) is only recognized by certain segments of certain areas in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran etc. Not all people from these countries or this religion should be painted with the same brush as these extremists. Do not forget that domestic violence is prevalent all over the world lest we forget many women in Canada are also murdered by their loved ones for a variety of reasons....like cheating, wanting a divorce etc. For some Canadian men this is also shameful only we just don't call it "honour killing" Here we call it murder!

According to the Reliance of the Traveller, an authoritative guide to Sunni Orthodoxy certified by Al- Ahzar University in Cairo, parents who murder their children are not subject to penal retaliation. That is a doctrine well codified in Islamic law. An honor killings are not only committed against women - they may be committed against men as well and often are. This isn't just domestic violence. The intention makes all the difference. There is a difference between hitting your wife because you harbor misogynistic attitudes and actively killing your children and spouse because you believe it will redeem the family honor. People who commit honor killings may otherwise be perfectly good parents or spouses, but the religious imperative is preeminent. Don't be an apologist for these actions.

What was certified as correct was the translation of that centuries old document. That differs substantially with advocating such measures as they existed hundred of years ago.

You are quite correct in saying the above, however what you don't mention is that in the Islamic countries you mention Sharia law is in place. According to Sharia Law the lot of a women is worth less than a man, which is why in those countries (And quite a few other Islamic countries) women are second class citizens. In contrast in the West, Women have equality. In the former a man can get away with murdering his women folk, in the West he goes to jail.

It's a message to anyone anywhere still believing in superstition or ancient cults - you need to abandon those mideval practices and start subscribing to modern philsophies about respect for life, liberty and freedom for all.
If you don't, you bring not only shame, but doom to your own existence.
