CHARLOTTETOWN - The personal driver for P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz has been charged with impaired driving.

James David MacPhail of Argyle Shore was arrested on Jan. 28 at 2:07 a.m., one block south of the provincial legislature, said Richard Collins, deputy chief of the Charlottetown Police Service.

The 23-year-old is to appear in provincial court on March 1, Collins said Wednesday.

Collins also confirmed that MacPhail was not driving a government-owned vehicle when he was arrested.

As well, MacPhail was the only person in the car when it was stopped near the corner of Sydney Street and Great George Street, he said.

Geoff Townsend, a spokesman for Ghiz, said the special assistant to the premier has been on a leave of absence from his job since Jan. 30.

Townsend says MacPhail will remain on leave until his court matters are dealt with.

MacPhail could not be reached for comment.
