The Huffington Post’s growing presence in Canada took a big leap this morning with the arrival of Le Huffington Post Québec, the online news and blogging site’s latest expansion.

“Quebec is witnessing a revolution this morning with the launch of Le Huffington Post Québec,” the site’s managing editor, Patrick White, wrote in a blog posting. “We hope this site -- in French for Quebecers and by Quebecers -- will open the a window to a new world.”

In a blog posting Wednesday, HuffPost co-founder Arianna Huffington noted this would mark the first time there will be two Huffington Post editions in one country.

“But it won't be a sibling rivalry; it will be a powerful collaboration, a reflection of our commitment to being the hub of reporting, comprehensive curation, group blogging and engagement across all of Canada,” she wrote.

The Huffington Post launched in the U.S. in 2005 as an alternative source of online news, quickly growing to become one of the country’s largest news sites and a leader in leveraging social media for news dissemination.

Its “mix of high brow and low brow with an irreverent take and serious commitment to journalism … translates well into any language,” White wrote.

Since AOL bought The Huffington Post almost exactly a year ago for $315 million (U.S.), the news organization -- now named AOL Huffington Post Media Group -- has set its sights on rapid international expansion, launching The Huffington Post Canada -- its first venture outside the U.S. -- last May, following that up with a U.K. edition several months later.

And last month it launched Le Huffington Post, a French edition, in partnership with France’s leading broadsheet, Le Monde. Plans are now well underway for L’Huffington Post, an Italian edition in partnership with the daily L’Espresso, and El Huffington Post, a Spanish edition that will partner with El Pais.

The arrival of a Quebec edition of HuffPost has had the province’s media buzzing for weeks, with commentators and consumers speculating on how the arrival of an online heavy hitter will affect the province’s media landscape.

In a rehash of what has now become an old debate for HuffPost, the Montreal Gazette reported last week that at least nine bloggers meant to write for the Quebec edition had left the organization over controversy that they would be writing for free. The Huffington Post has a policy that it does not pay for blog contributions.

White noted that the departures would not leave much of a mark on the fledgling operation.

“We respect the decisions of those who have declined but we have a strong team of bloggers from Quebec and we look forward to engaging conversations with Quebecers,” the HuffPost Quebec managing editor said in a statement.

He noted in an interview last week that Huff Post Quebec still has some 120 bloggers to draw from.

In a blog posting Wednesday, Arianna Huffington stressed the “Quebecois” nature of the new site, pointing out it would “encompass all things Québec and be run by a strong locally-based editorial team with deep personal and professional roots in the province.”

Huffington set her sights on Quebec’s flagging job market and the controversies surrounding its crumbling infrastructure as a priority for coverage on the site.

“In the last three months of 2011, Québec lost nearly 70,000 jobs, a loss estimated to be the province's worst in nearly three decades,” Huffington wrote. “Montreal's infrastructure is a perpetual concern. Last summer, a concrete expressway collapsed, spurring conversations about the crumbling state of Montreal's roads. And the decaying Champlain Bridge -- which will eventually be replaced by another bridge over the St. Lawrence River -- has worried Quebecers for years.”

Besides White, who comes to The Huffington Post from Canoe.ca, where he was editor in chief, the Huffington Post Quebec staff will also include news editor Jean-Phillipe Cipriani, formerly of Radio-Canada, and blogs editor Tamy Emma Pepin, formerly of the Journal de Montreal.

AOL Canada, which will operate the Quebec site along with Huffington Post Canada, has big ambitions for its sites. General Manager Graham Moysey noted that Huff Post Canada has seen its audience grow 162 per cent since launch nine months ago.

“We look of forward to bringing to Quebec the smart news, real-time opinion, and vibrant social nature of the Huffington Post platform," he said in a statement.

Well... if you're into left of the left point of view, I guess you'll enjoy the blogs...

As far as "news" are concerned, the picking is kind of tin. Ho well, we'll see where it goes... In the mean time, I'll stick with Le Devoir for my "French" news.

08:41 PM on 02/11/2012
I'm not in the ROC. And I'm not your friend, Richard. Et je suis francophone.

Richard, this is an English site so would you please respect that and either post in English or post on the Quebec site. Steven Harper may have recognized Quebec as a "nation" however, that is in name only, and does not necessarily reflect the views of many Canadians. Quebec could not survive without the rest of Canada. I love Quebec, especially Montreal where I lived for numerous years. Montreal has so much potential and yet the energy and monies that could have been spent "building" the city and the province were mainly used to promote separatism and discord. It is unfortunate.
In a sense I do agree with you that the Canadian culture as a whole is being americanised to some degree; however, it is not by the creation of a HUFFPost Quebec that this will change. Perhaps Canadians could read Canadian papers and let HuffPOst, whose content is mainly American anyhow, be. However, my bet is that HuffPOst Quebec will have the most traffic of all. We'll just have to wait and see:)

Thank you for the Quebec edition of Huffington Post

I think the next great thing would be a Spanish edition in the US.

If the point of creating a HP Quebec is to generate traffic on the site then it looks like it's successful. lol ! Obviously, the rest of Canada is going to have comments when one province appears to be singled out. I have even noticed a few Americans reacting to this decision. I was born in the PROVINCE of Qc. and lived there most of my life. I am fluently bilingual. ( one parent of French origin, the other parent of English origin) Recently, I moved to another province mainly because I was fed up with the dissension in Qc. I think that it will be sad indeed if a HP Qc. is going to open up that can of worms again just as it was beginning to die down. My preference would be for HP to have a French Canadian HP vs a Quebec HP but that will not happen as it will not generate the same traffic on the site. Responsibility vs greed. Which do you think will win out?

Agreed!

Agree,

I would have much rather seen a "French - Canada" version... maybe it would have given Quebecers an opportunity to learn about what's going on in the rest of Canada.

Unfortunately, the bloggers they picked only cares about QC issues...

It's a missed opportunity if you ask me.

What strikes me reading comments is that none of you Canadians who are bashing and arguing over HUFFPOST QC validity seem to care about the one of the Canadian site? Aren't you Canadian capable of developing your own sources of information threw an Internet initiative? Why on earth would you need or use an American own information resource in order to be inform of what is happening in your own country?

Stop bashing about Québec's HuffPost legitimacy and wonder about it in the ROC as well.

HuffPost Turning into an important internet media empire anyone??? While what we wish for with Internet is access to a greater diversity of information?

T.O. IS the center of the universe, and the Parti Quebecois played a HUGE role in making that all happen. And please, don't ask me to provide the proof, do your own research and you will see how the election in 1976 changed the whole landscape in Ontario. All those companies and banks that moved west down the 401 to Toronto. And the list goes on................

Vive le Quebec Libre!! >>>> has left Quebec begging for money ever since. And that is a fact.

I know, because I have lived in Mtl for 25 years and politics all but KILLED Montreal. But its still a GREAT place to visit.
01:07 PM on 02/09/2012
I agree with you, the failure of the PQ to manage to convince the Quebec people, the failure of the two lost referendums, has left the Quebec poorer and created a pertual «incertitude». Had the referendum been won, we would not talk about this anymore and could concentrate other issues. As long as Quebec is "just" a province, we won't perform economically as well as we could.

Odd how HP has several national home pages and now only one provincial one. Why not a HP Califormia or an HP Virginia. Canada, including Quebec, is one nation -period. If Huffington Post Alberta appears I will accuse HP of fracturing Canadian culture.

Why a separate site just for Quebec? We're all Canadians, it should all be together on one Bi-lingual site. A local for Quebec is great, but why stregnthen the stupid notion that Quebec is in some way separate from canada by giving them their own dedicated site? If nothing else,a good idea is renaming it to Huffington Post French-Canadian.
11:35 PM on 02/08/2012
Or maybe this site will give a chance to our english speaking quebecers as well as our french speaking quebecers to be able communicate with each other and with our fellow canadiens, each in their own mother tongue and see that we are not so different after all. If this happens, it will be great!

It is not French Canadian. French is only the language. France has its own site.

And what do you suggest for a unified Canadian site, a mix of French and English articles on the same page?
