Ford Allies Expected To Oust TTC's Gary Webster

Gary Webster

TTC board members allied with Mayor Rob Ford are expected to call for the removal of the TTC's chief general manager Tuesday.

On Friday the TTC announced a "special meeting" for Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. that is said to involve "a personnel matter."

Ford adversary and former TTC Chair Joe Mihevc said he has been told that a majority of commissioners are looking to remove Gary Webster from his position.

“Here we have a transit manager that is known internationally as one of the best public transit managers that exists out there being fired, because he doesn’t fall into line under the mayor’s ideological plan to build subways,” Mihevc said.

Coun. Frank Di Giorgio has a seat on the current commission and is one of the members who signed the petition asking for the meeting.

"If Gary Webster isn't going to work with us, then the option will be taken," Di Giorgio told CBC News.

He added that a number of items on the agenda deal with "a disharmony that has crept in the TTC and commissioners will use whatever authority we have to remove it."

Di Giorgio, along with city councillors Norm Kelly, Denzil Minnan-Wong, Cesar Palacio and Vince Crisanti signed the petition.

What a strange debate. "Ford is doing what the citizen's want" - 'you're a liar'
"the experts say LRT is better" - 'you're a liar'

Can someone point me to a site that contains and compares the two positions? I'd like to decide for myself, which of you are the liars. I have readily admitted I like the idea of LRT's but if as has been stated by the deputy mayor Subways would last longer be cheaper to run over the long haul and operational in any kind of weather. Logic says build Subways. Who has the actual facts?

The problem is obvious Mayor Ford and his brother are actually illiterate. They actually couldn't read the report but what they did understand was the word "Subway" which of course they thought was the sandwich chain. Besides who ever heard of an LRT sandwich before?

Ford is a public menace. It like we are moving backwards in time, the war on contraceptive in the states and the war on public transit in Toronto.

Thank God I don't live in Toronto with that idiot wo thinks he knows more about transit than an acknowledged expert. Obviously those councillors are only interested in their own ideological bent, not the benfits to taxpayers and riders. If the guy goes I hope he sues them ffor their a-- and wins big time.

The Mayor ran on a platform that stressed canceling LRT and building subways. It doesn't matter what the supposed "transit experts" think, most of the residents want subways.

They want subways in part because the proposed LRTs dramatically impact traffic, reducing the capacity of major roads by as much as 50%. The "transit experts" don't give any serious consideration to the impact on vehicular traffic of their plans.

These "experts" also don't give any deep thought to city growth. In a recent report they suggest that there simply aren't enough people living along one corridor to make a subway profitable. HELLO! If you wait for densities to reach that point it's going to cost even more to put in the subway. HELLO! If you wait that long the transit system will be overcrowded for the ten or so years it takes to build the subway. HELLO! Subways attract development. They encourage businesses. They improve the economic condition of their corridor.

While Toronto has pretty decent winter weather, I wonder if the "experts" actually ride the rails during heavy winter weather? Subways can run through any weather and their riders travel in relative comfort. Ergo, more riders more of the time. Ergo, much lower economic losses on the part of residents when the weather gets bad.

If city council had any sense they would have been building a km or two every year. That way we'ed have a decent weather proof transit system and lots of semi-permanent construction jobs.

In case you have not heard, we can't afford subways.

There's so much wrong here, that its not even worth doing a point by point break down.

Suffice it to say, every statement you've made on the subject of transit planning is wrong or grossly inaccurate.

Ford didn't break the 50% on his vote totals, both of his competitors supported LRTs over subways. All those councillors, also had mandates to act on the transit file which they did.

Ford has one vote on city council, not a license to roughshod over the city.

The Ford brothers will go down as THE MOST CORRUPT politicians Toronto has ever known.

They dismiss people that don't agree with them, they ignore council votes that they don't agree with. I'll be surprised if Rob and Doug make it to the next election without either one of them going to jail.

Did you by any chance say similar things about the former mayor who upon taking office unilaterally cancelled a major bridge contract costing the city an undisclosed amount that has been speculated to be over 50 million?

Conscientious citizens should be able to call a spade a spade regardless of where they are on the political spectrum.

Don't worry, come next election, the Ford brothers will be toast. Of course I doubt, they will even run again.

Well Ford has a 4 year mandate and he will make sure that he has positioned his view of Toronto well into the next decade as to his TTC challegers Ford will have them removed its how he operates. You will always be a friend to the mayor provided you remember to always give him your honest opinion that he supplied you with earlier in the day. While i don't like the Mayors policies at least he makes decisions and stand behind them far better than the wishy washy usless mayor he replaced. Let's hope our next mayor is much more Liberal but has a little more ford when comes to driving public policy than the last did or a Mr Ford style mayor will be with Toronto for a very long time.

The trade off is nowhere close to a reasonable one.
"Well he's a butcher and is destroying this city...but at least he's determined!" Whhhat??

I believe Municipal elections are every 3 years, which means we have one more year and eleven months to go before we see the end of Mr. Ford.

Time for Ford and his clown car to go. Toronto needs leadership, not ignorant bullies.

While I'm not a huge fan of the Mayor he did get elected by a significant majority. He got elected because people liked his platform. He has been diligent in achieving what he promised. The fact that you don't like his policies is your problem, not his.

Getting elected and doing the right thing for the people you are meant to represent are not necessarily the same thing. Especially with the Ford brothers.

Your not a huge fan? Do you write anything that has a tinge of truth???
You are his sole supporter on this issue here, you fudge stats to put out any defense since you can not find a real one.
