Woman Falls While Texting On TV: Distraction From Devices Makes For CBC Live News Blooper (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post Canada   Posted: 02/17/2012 10:07 am

Even live news tends to be filmed in a controlled setting, ensuring a straightforward broadcast that delivers the story. But every once in a while, the outside creeps in, and viewers take to their remote controls to make sure they really saw what they think they saw.

Such was the case on CBC News this week, when a woman outside the studio was filmed walking, texting and then completely bailing on a set of stairs, a segment captured without the reporter ever being aware of it.

While it's unclear if she's seriously injured based the video (and we hope this isn't the case), it's a good reminder that texting and walking can be a dangerous combination -- some places are even floating the idea of a ban on the behaviour altogether. Studies have even found that texting while walking not only affects your pace, but potentially your memory recall as well.

Much like the fatal headphones incidents we reported on earlier this week, it seems that our electronic devices are posing more hazards to our daily lives -- and this is a good reminder to be aware at all times.

It is illegal here to talk on the phone or text while driving. Not that it stops people. They are fools. I bus it to work. Everyday there is this "woman" who is on the phone before the bus comes and still on after she leaves the bus. There is now a person who texts from the time they get on untill they get off. This is at 5am. Do they not talk when they are home. Just think of the cost every month. I do not have a cell, I got rid of it just over 2yrs ago after my Mom passed. I only had it because people needed to beable to reach me at all times. Do not miss it at all.

I was watching the news and saw that! I'm sorry but I laughed. Sometimes the background is more interesting than the news.

cell phones are a great tool but i will never understand why people use them so much. i mean, why would you WANT to be reachable at all times?

i love how couples go out on dates and spend so much time worrying about what their phone might be saying to them rather than talking with the person across from them.

it's a disease. it's one more way this "globalized interconnected world" makes people even more isolated, lonely, and farther apart. same as facebook - how many "friends" do you actually know?

actually i remember watching a similar thing that happened down in a u.s. mall where the security camera caught a woman texting and walking for about 15 feet before tripped into a huge fountain/wishing pond! haha. she sued the mall but lost i think - but wow was she ever embarrassed on air. it's annoying enough that i have to listen to people on the bus and sidewalk talk on their phone, let alone have to watch out for idiots texting while walking - without even looking to see where they're going.

How about when a teen step daughter gives birth to her child and within mins is texting her facebook account about the news while holding her infant daughter in the hospital bed. True story.
Not only are the devices posing as a health risk for more than one reason they are also part of the responsibility of todays human lacking any empathy for one another.
The other reason is the parent who also owns the similar device and just as much an addict not able to raise their own child to know the differences of realities. Maybe I will tweet on this LOL

And this is what is wrong with society. Lest you forget you are human...karma is funny that way.

That's the funniest thing the CBC has aired in years.

The surprise is that more people haven't been killed where the cause was texting or yacking on the phone. How many times in the day have people walked into or almost walked into me not looking where they are going while texting or yacking.

I bet that woman in the video will not learn her lesson and will be back at the same spot texting away. Is that last text really worth your life ?

When I see someone coming into my path while texting, I just stand there and wait for them to bump into me and then give them a dirty look!
09:35 PM on 02/17/2012
haha Mee too! I laugh and watch them give ME the dirty look.

You can't cure stupid....
I see people texting while driving almost everyday, I just move as far away as I can....

I absolutely agree.

"... some places are even floating the idea of a ban on the behaviour altogether."

I mean, really? They have to pass a LAW to tell you to watch where you're going? I am stick and tired of paying the price for the actions of the lowest common denominator.

I'm still waiting for some nerfherder to dump his piping hot venti latte into his lap while driving so that they'll ban beverages in vehicles too... that day will come.

I saw an article about a few states considering a ban of ANY electronics in vehicles which includes hands free phone too...I mean it makes me laugh to see people having conversations with their dashboards until I saw one kiss a post.
