Operation White North: Anonymous Demands Public Safety Minister Vic Toews Resign, E-Snooping Bill C-30 Scrapped

Vikileaks has been shut down, but Public Safety Minister Vic Toews isn't out of hot water yet.

Hacker group Anonymous has posted a video demanding the resignation of Toews and calling for the controversial online surveillance bill C-30 to be scrapped.

The video's message targets Toews for reintroducing bill C-30 despite backlash from internet users and privacy advocates.

"All this legislation does is give your corrupted government more power to control its citizens," says the video. "Anonymous will not stand for this."

“We know all about you Mr. Toews, and during Operation White North we will release what we have unless you scrap this bill. We told you to expect us.”

Bill C-30, the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act, would allow authorities access to Internet subscriber information — including name, address, telephone number and email address — without a warrant. After introducing the bill, Toews was deluged by a flood of online backlash including a flurry of hashtags like #TellVicEverything and #DontToewsMeBro and an anonymous Twitter account, Vikileaks, that revealed details of Toews' divorce and spending.

  • Twitter Reacts To Vikileaks Resignation And Tory Online Surveillance Bill

UPDATE: On Monday Feb. 27, Liberal leader acknowledged that a Liberal staffer was behind the Vikileaks30 Twitter account that released information about Vic Toews' divorce. That person has been fired and Rae has apologized to the House Of Commons. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews faced an online backlash due to his championing of Bill C-30, the lawful access bill. Two hashtags, #donttoewsmebro and #tellviceverything became the vocal points of internet humour and commentary. DEAR ANONYMOUS, it would be great if you used your resources and all your hacking info,to perhaps try to bring peace on the planet,or perhaps feed the children, who might in some cases be abused,or try to create jobs for the jobless.etc.... there are so many causes that could make your organization a real hero.fighting those that fight cyberpredators is really silly. if you are worried about your privacy, its one of two causes you have something to hide or are embarrassed of something. to be honest with you,if hackers are able to access info, what makes you think the gov t can t hack.and they probably already do.and guess what they can go through other agencies too. there are no borders to pollution.same for cyberpredators,so why not the agencies that make the kids life safer.

I absolutely oppose the online spying HAP2. ....and I confess, I am guilty. I voted conservative. I did not realize this was a CRAP government.

This bill is not about fighting cyber-predators it is about spying on citizens without a warrant. Inappropriate use will have no oversight and we will have no recourse.

It is documented that police regularly misuse the databases they have already. Why in the world would we grant anyone unlimited access to our private lives without a warrant?

Well the good news is that either way Vic Toews political career has been severely damaged in the past week. Even if he doesn't resign his credibility is now residing at zero.

Apparently, according to Rick Mercer's Twitter account, he is also the subject of tonight's rant on the Mercer Report.

YOU GO MR.TOEWS, these anonymous, would be the first to cry foul and a change in the law if it where their child being molested by a stranger.you can spy in my computer if it help find these cyberpredators and pedophiles.and make the punishment harsher and create a child molester and pedophile registry accessible to all, so people can protect their children in the neighbourhoods. and pedophiles, grow up! realize the harm you are creating to these children, their lives are forever broken, perhaps yourself you were a victim ,does that mean you have to perpetuate the hurt to another generation. Protecting the children,is our future, the future of our country too. D

It's time for Camada to divorce itself from the Harper (aka Reform Party) government. The cost in taxes, in ethics, in freedom and in simple understanding of law is too high. Canadians don't need a party ruled by medieval church ideas.

To bad they never asked for Harper's resignation too since this bill was his idea...after all he will save thousands if not millions of dollars in the party funds when he can have the taxpayer pickup the bill instead of having to pay Rupert out of his party's own pocket.

Spying on the criminal official opposition will be a treat for Harper, Vic, Tony, and Johnny! Movie night at the Wolfchanze bunker...tonight's showing is: "Bob Rae and family having an private family discussion!"

I think Vic needs to be sent a length of rope (as suggested by a PC senator) before the age the babysitter (at the time he first got on top of her) is made public. He's the type of predator children need protection from.
02:37 PM on 02/21/2012
Exactly! Even if the babysitters were of barley legal age, Towes was at least 30 years older
and more importantly, in a position of authority over them.
The man is a complete dirt bag.

This is must be pretty scary for Mr. Toews. I don't like the stuff that's in this bill but cyberterrorism isn't the way to solve it.

But seriously. We can only hope, at this point, that all Anonymous will do is just release information that will humiliate Mr. Toews and not do anything that will actually hurt him.

It's hardly terrorism when you're just directing people to information that's already published. Vic shouldn't have climbed on top of the babysitter!

I'm not concerned about the information published by Anonymous. All that is for humiliation purposes and it's a very minor case of terrorism. I think hacking into government institutions is considered cyberterrorism. I'm more concerned about the extent to which Anonymous will take this. I'm concerned about any compromises in Vic's personal safety.

Senseless violence to our public officials never straightens anything out. We are not on a playground.
07:00 PM on 02/19/2012
This is just silly. Anonymous comes late onto the bandwagon on this one, then they impose "Mind Heist" onto the background of their video, and they don't even have a French translation of what needs to be said!

And, as always, all they will do is point their HOIC's towards government and CPC websites, which will only exacerbate the issue at hand, which would only legitimize the bill and not defeat it. Anonymous is just a shell of what it could have been, and the fact that this bill was in the books since before May 2011 and they only respond now with a statement brimming with grandeur, after half the battle's been fought? They've become a joke.

Canada has been in the shadows for so long no one pays much attention. It really is not strange that we have to do things alone. That problem is exacerbated by the fact that we are considered a puppet to the US. If people stood up to the Harper regime and made their point things might change. Don't quit so early with your skepticism.
