Vic Toews: RCMP Asked To Investigate 'Serious' Threats Against Public Safety Minister

The RCMP has been asked to investigate what Vic Toews’ spokesman Mike Patton describes as "serious" threats against the public safety minister and his family, the National Post reports.

Toews received criticism over the past week concerning Bill C-30, a controversial online surveillance bill that would allow police to access personal Internet subscriber information without a warrant. The backlash came in the form of Twitter memes such as #TellVicEverything and #DontToewsMeBro, and Vikileaks, an anonymous Twitter account divulging details of Toews' divorce, which has been shut down. The hacker group Anonymous also posted a video demanding the public safety minister to step down and calling for Bill C-30 to be scrapped.

This weekend, Toews responded to recent events in a letter circulated to his Manitoba constituents:

An Open Letter To My Constituents Dear Constituents,

Over the last few weeks I have been subjected to an extensive personal attack by my political opponents as a result of certain legislation that I have introduced in the House of Commons on behalf of the federal government.

These attacks, which have included criminal acts and threats of criminal acts against me and my family, have been referred to the police for investigation. Any further criminal activity or threats of criminal activity against me or my family will also be referred to the police.

As my constituents I would like you to know that the personal attacks, criminal acts and threats of future criminal acts against me will not dissuade me from carrying out my responsibilities as an elected Member of the House of Commons and as the Minister of Public Safety for Canada.

The personal attacks against me are based on allegations contained in affidavits filed in the course of my divorce proceedings a number of years ago. The affidavits are on the public record and filed with the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench. These allegations have been the basis of prior personal attacks against me and I assume they will form the basis of attacks against me for many years to come.

I want you to know that I have never responded publicly to the specific allegations made in these affidavits nor will I ever do so. I will be fully accountable for any responsibility that I bear for the breakdown of my previous marriage but that accountability is not something I owe to the public generally or to my political opponents in particular. It is a personal accountability which I cannot avoid nor do I seek to do so.

However, I do want you to know that I have a spouse and a young son who I love more than life itself.

The other night, while I was reading my favourite poet, William Butler Yeats, I came across these lines:

‘Yet they that know all things but know That all this life can give us is A child’s laughter, a woman’s kiss.”

No words could ever describe my love for my young son and my spouse any better. What a fortunate man I am to have them in my life.

Sincerely,

Vic Toews

MP for Provencher

UPDATE: On Monday Feb. 27, Liberal leader acknowledged that a Liberal staffer was behind the Vikileaks30 Twitter account that released information about Vic Toews' divorce. That person has been fired and Rae has apologized to the House Of Commons. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews faced an online backlash due to his championing of Bill C-30, the lawful access bill. Two hashtags, #donttoewsmebro and #tellviceverything became the vocal points of internet humour and commentary. Can we wait for the next election to challenge this clearly criminal bill? No we can not. It needs to be challenged now. What Anonymous is doing, while criminal, is also an act of defiance against a government that wants to have the ability to watch what you do online in the privacy of your own home.

When under severe humiliation, trot out the poetry lines!

Poetry was never written in order to be used by "lying" politicians in the political arena.

For a man, excuse me, I meant a bully, to write up poetry references in a constituent letter was as bad as this same man, reading lines from a teleprompter, videoing a public service message on BULLYING!

And for Harpo moving his top skilled attack dog, or was that top skilled attack bully, out in front of Victor to do the "carnival barking" at the NDP on that Friday question period, tells more about Harpo than it does about these two thugs.

OMG, Baird read from the same teleprompter as did Victor on that "bullying" public service announcement.

The issue is not Victor in this case, it is Harpo for doing such a horrendous job of PERSONNEL management by putting this slugs into those ministerial positions and FAILING TO DISCLOSE the content of this bill during the election race. Of course, had he done that then, he would not be in office now.

And I haven't even mentioned the guy at Treasury, yet!

I'm heading to youtube to do my civic duty and report all threats of violence to the RCMP. I urge everyone else to be like Vic and report them as well. These malicious threats cannot go unchallenged. You either stand with Vic or you stand with the trolls.

I believe very little the government says as well, but I doubt that vicleaks is a smear attempt on the NDP. For one thing vicleaks is airing Toews personal dirty laundry, and no politician would willing do that. Secondly politics are so polarized amongst the populace that it's doubtful that such a plan would be of any use. People who vote NDP wouldn't believe that the NDP did it, and people who vote Con would jump at the chance to blame the NDP.

No one threatened him. They just outed him on so many fronts - his divorce, his ignorance of the bill he has been defending. He is a fool and he is just flailing around looking for excuses.
02:54 AM on 02/20/2012
First of all, that's a poorly written letter. Secondly, how can stating the facts of his divorce be an attack on him? They're just facts. He doesn't like them because the truth hurts.

Actually, I don't think they are facts yet. They are apparently allegations contained in a sworn affidavit. However, they are in the public record and there is no reason I can see why it would be illegal to republish them. Toews obviously minds being outed but he is in favour of letting "any police officer" search my computer without giving a reason for doing so to a judge. C-30 will justify search expeditions looking for things on anyone. This will be contrary to the Charter of Rights and expensive for the government to implement. Eithr they will have to pay for the costs of searching or they will make the ISPs foot the bill. And if so, those costs will be passed back to us, the citizens, to pay to have ourselves snooped upon. PS. There is nothing on my computer that would be objectionable to Toews except political protest which I suppose he would want to stop.

Since their intervention in favour of the tories in the 2006 election, the RCMP has acted in lockstep loyalty to prop up the tory regime they helped install in power at that time.

"Vic" must be short for "victim."

It's never been his fault when the media or ordinary people have pointed out how he's abused his offices to get private information about others, underfunded or otherwise undermined programs for youth and victims of abuse, and generally shafted working folks.

Threats - likely empty - by a few against the personal safety of an individual are deplorable. Threats - utterly sincere - by a few against the individual liberty and privacy of millions is far more deplorable.

Just a thought, but has anyone considered the idea that the alleged operation, "white north", is nothing but a stunt by some wannabe? My limited search of anon related sites doesn't show anything that leads me to conclude that the story is legit. Are we all being trolled?
