www.hilltimes.com:

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews claims he was attacked on two internet fronts from inside the House of Commons last week and says in a letter to the House Speaker that one of the assaults--the short-lived Vikileaks Twitter account spreading details of his divorce--was an attempt to "anonymously degrade" his reputation.

Vic Toews continues to say things about his bill that are not true. The bill as it stood allowed anyone appointed as an inspector to look at everything without a warrant.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding Bill C-30, the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act.

Canada's laws currently do not adequately protect Canadians from online exploitation and we think there is widespread agreement that this is a problem.

We want to update our laws while striking the right balance between combating crime and protecting privacy.

Let me be very clear: the police will not be able to read emails or view web activity unless they obtain a warrant issued by a judge and we have constructed safeguards to protect the privacy of Canadians, including audits by privacy commissioners.

What's needed most is an open discussion about how to better protect Canadians from online crime. We will therefore send this legislation directly to Parliamentary Committee for a full examination of the best ways to protect Canadians while respecting their privacy.

For your information, I have included some myths and facts below regarding Bill C-30 in its current state.

Sincerely,

Vic Toews
Member of Parliament for Provencher

Myth: Lawful Access legislation infringes on the privacy of Canadians.

Fact: Our Government puts a high priority on protecting the privacy of law-abiding Canadians. Current practices of accessing the actual content of communications with a legal authorization will not change.

So wait the liberals where the ones to actually created this bill and actually made it even MORE invasive I'm not in favor of this Bill but there is a double standard where was the outrage then ?

Vic Toews truly is a victim here. I bet Vikileaks didn't even have a warrant to get all that information:)

Vic is learning just how annoying it is to have someone invade his privacy. But apparently it gives him no insight into his understanding of how invasive his policies are.

I notice that Vic is available. Janet Napolitano, the US Director of Homeland Security is single. They have a lot in common. A match made in heaven.

no pity for him, after what he proposed, and how he used what happened to him for faschism, no way. get out , go home, retire.

I don't get how they don't see the hypocrisy in all this. While I would agree that any actual threats should be investigated and prosecuted, I'm pretty sure that all the information that's been "leaked" is a matter of public record. Whereas the stuff that this law proposes is currently not pubic record.

To further the hypocrisy, why is this legal spreading of public-record truth a horrible thing, which he thinks worthy of investigation (and presumably punishment), but when the Conservatives called around my riding telling people that my MP was retiring - something which is patently false - that was perfectly fine and the conservatives were shocked that anyone was upset.

I'm sure i'm not the first one to point these out, but I thought I should add my voice. This government needs to be thrown out, before it's too late.

Get this through your head Victor; people don't like you! People don't care that your 'privacy' has been invaded. People regard you as the control freak in chief's control freak. You garner no sympathy because you have no sympathy. You're experiencing instant karma, what goes around comes around, coming back to bite you and all the other cliches that describe your comeuppance. People just don't like you Vic! Nobody's going to say, poor Vic, at least not with any sincerity. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can go back to being plain, unlikeable Vic Toews.

The ambiguity of the RCMP response implies to me that they are a bit skeptical. As am I.

gee mr toews you are uncomfortable with internet activity that is right there out in the open -------

the rest of the country is uncomfortable with clandestine activity which you are seeking to legalize

What Mr. Toews clearly does not understand is that he degraded himself. His hubris is so pronounced that he cannot see that he brought his problems on himself. It is totally irrelevant who publicly released information from his divorce records, because they are a matter of public record.

The degrading behaviour in those records about his affair with a babysitter, is Mr. Toews degrading bejhaviour and no one eles. The ludicrous statement he made in the HC about the flawed legislation to the efffect you are either with us or with the child pornographers was utterly degrading to every Canadian who could see deficiencies of the legislation and had to endure the insult from Mr. Toews associating them with child pornographers. This was Mr. Toews conduct in making that statement - no one elses.

To now try to deflect his degrading bahaviour and play the victim role is the height of hypocracy and degradation to the Canadian people. Mr. Toews is simply not fit for office.

Isn't that what the "Harper Government" wants for most Canadians? To siege everyone's castles (homes) with spies. Friends and Family members of ...are exempt.

Essentially, with Vic and Harper's idea, cities, towns, and villages will become like electronic prisons and YOU will be tracked live at the will of Harper and Vic or whomever wants to harm you. This is stalking by definition. In that era, peacefully and lawful communication that denote any opposition to policies will at least be noted and tag to YOU and YOU can and may suffer for it by being put on a watch list.

This means the Harper Government wants to be able to track everyone of YOU!!!!

i think his actions degraded himself. than anon user of the twitter account just stated his degrading behaviour. And i find it interesting that he uses the word "degrading" to describe his own actions.
